[Android] Android Widget

Having a home screen widget for Android would be really nice. All other media players have one on Android so it'd be great to see that in Spotify too. It'd make things so much easier to just be able control to Spotify from your home screen instead of swiping down for the notification bar or opening the app. It's really simple functionality so please can you add it.

Hey folks,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this idea in the Community.

We’re excited to let you know the Android Widget is back. To get listening, make sure you’re on the latest version of the app and Spotify will show in the widget menu on your device. The widget is now resizable too and some stability issues have been fixed.

I do have to say ..removing the widget was the most dumb new idea ..to change something so big like that ..w/o community support or bringing it up for discussion. I may even switch providers over this one ..your not the only one ..time to consider my options if it doesnt change soon!

Hey Guys!

I made this small App that brings back the widget to the latest version of Spotify, please check it out, you may find it interesting as it installs as if the Widget never was removed - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=spark.me.spotwidget

Thanks. 😊

I'm considering switching to tidal or apple over this widget... can I roll back to my previous version?

I used the widget ALL.THE.TIME!  Spotify lost a bit of my love when it took away the widget!

This is not and was not a new idea. Widgets are the reason people use android, and you took something away we already had. Nor do widgets take that much programming upkeep — stupid company screwing over their customers.

For anyone wondering if you should continue your subscription, or switch services:

When was the last time you noticed a change in Spotify and thought it was good?

I know there's a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff behind updates (not that we'd know, since Spotify is a multi-billion dollar company that somehow can't be bothered to issue patch notes), but even with the benefit of the doubt, the app runs like garbage compared to the alternatives.

But I bet between this, and maybe the library change for those of you who don't live in playlists, you've got some very prominent examples of updates that **bleep** you off.

And now look at Spotify's response to the feedback. Largely absent, and when they do comment, it's empty, dismissive, and obtuse.

If a business treated you this badly when you walked in the door, would you ever want to go there again?

Mirez2000

Couldn't agree more.

Also a note to all those downgrading or installing older APKs to 'fix' this, all you are doing is putting off the inevitable.  Clearly Spotify doesn't care, the widget isn't coming back and sooner or later the old versions wont work so you'll end up in the same situation. (Not to mention potential security risks)

I get its an effort but just switch provider, things aren't going to get better!!

Worst idea ever. Can not believe anyone in the IT department could really think that users would prefer the notifications panel with its limited capability over the widget. If there is one, on behalf of all users terminate them immediately and suggest a career in a non logic based envirion. Once that has been performed reinstate the widget.

I have loved spotify for almost a decade now. Over the last year, there have been an increasing and worrying set of product decisions on Android which feel very much driven by PMs, product designers, and upper engineering management working without the influence or input of the actual community of users. I work in tech. I understand. However, the actual experience has degraded to the point that the app is no longer a joy to use. I can't unsave individual songs from albums. Every time the app loads, it isn't usable for almost a minute while it spins communicating with home base. And now the widget, the crown jewel of my goofy-looking home page, is gone. I don't really know why this is the final straw, but it is. I'll be waiting one week, evaluating the other options, and unless major changes have happened I'll be jumping to another ship.
