[Android] Android Widget

Having a home screen widget for Android would be really nice. All other media players have one on Android so it'd be great to see that in Spotify too. It'd make things so much easier to just be able control to Spotify from your home screen instead of swiping down for the notification bar or opening the app. It's really simple functionality so please can you add it.

Hey folks,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this idea in the Community.

We’re excited to let you know the Android Widget is back. To get listening, make sure you’re on the latest version of the app and Spotify will show in the widget menu on your device. The widget is now resizable too and some stability issues have been fixed.

We appreciate your passion for this feature and want to thank you all for your feedback!

I've been trying to get an answer from Spotify with two particularly obvious questions.

  1. Can you give any example of a time when removing a feature made Spotify better?
  2. Why was the widget removed in the first place?

You will never, ever get a response to these two questions, probably because the honest truth is that, first, the cut & paste line about "adding and removing features to make Spotify better" is just empty corporate spin to make it sound like lost features were at least done with good intentions, and second, that it's a penny-pinching change to make the app cheaper to maintain.

Spotify is free to prove me wrong. Or, heck, anyone! I encourage all of you to ask them these questions and ones like them. Be kind to the poor customer service and tech support staff who have to deal with customers frustrated by decisions made by people way higher than them on the corporate ladder, but put the company in the awkward position where people are asking these questions over and over.

I mean, you'll be ghosted, but who knows? Maybe they'll create a decent app. And if not, well, switch to a competitor knowing for a fact that Spotify is hot garbage.

Widget is a must for me. I thought it was removed by mistake and will be soon back with another update. So it  looks like it's time to give a chance to some other family music provider. Too bad, as I got used to Spotify.

People of this Community don´t bother anymore complaining about this, they wouldn´t put the widget again, but i have a solution, i have downloaded "Material Music Widget" from the appstore, and for free i can link one Application, paid is for more, but becasue i only need it to replace the one that was tooked from us, i use the apk for free, and problem solved, doesnt dissaapear, doesnt link to another apk, only with spotify, everthing is fine again.

"Not right now" means not ever. I honestly don't understand the reason for removing the widget for android. Even if to say just a small percentage of users use it, what's a few lines of code? Freaking stupid. The apps bloted and slow regardless anyway. Spotify slowly removing features is slowly chipping away my 5 years of loyalty to this service.

I thought it's a bug. But it's a feature - all over again. The "no more widget feature".

I mean seariously, how can you remove this feature from the app? I have had three widgets on my homescreen: Spotify player, calendar and tasks/notes. I could survive removing the tasks/notes - not the others! It's such an essential feature.

The notification bar NEVER works. NEVER. NEVER EVER. I can only use it to stop the current song. Also, the widget was helping me to work around a few other small issues with the app. Who makes such decisions?

I wish I had as much money as Spotify apparently has, to be able to allow a few thousand customers to just walk with a shrug of my shoulders.

What **bleep** thinks it's a good idea to remove such useful features?
Now using Spotify is going to be much more of a slog.

Taking away this widget makes using Spotify SO much more cumbersome, especially when I'm driving. I always have to swipe through my screens to find the small app icon, oftentimes clicking on other apps accidentally because of bumpy roads, then go through the process of opening it up and scrolling to find what I want. The widget used to simplify this process so much...it was bigger and somehow involved fewer swipes. Why do tech companies always have to keep ruining things?

Every time I look to play Spotify I go to where my widget used to be and it's not there. Next my decision is "am I going to look thru my app drawer for the icon now or maybe I don't need to listen to that song so badly"

Keep this up and I may not need to be a premium sub anymore 🤷🏽‍♂️

When I had the widget I would pause songs and skip songs with ease. Now I just let spotify play non stop and use my volume keys to mute spotify as needed. Looks like removing the widget will cost spotify more as they have to pay more artists for music im not even listening to. Last night I left spotify playing all night and didn't even realize it since my volume was down. 24/7 streaming is that helpful spotify? Is this what you want us to do instead of using the widget? #bringbackthewidget
