[AutoPlay] Option to toggle Autoplay on/off across all devices/platforms

The Autoplay setting isn't working for connected devices and the web player. We need the Autoplay setting to work the same as it does on desktop and when playing on the phone.

Updated on 2023-02-07

Hey folks,

The "Autoplay" setting was recently updated. The single "Autoplay" setting in the desktop and mobile apps will now enable or disable Autoplay across all devices on your account. This change makes it easier to manage instead of there being 2 different settings.

You only need to change the Autoplay setting in one of the apps, either desktop or mobile, and it will apply to your account on all devices including the Web Player and Spotify Connect devices.

You can read the support article for more information about the Autoplay feature.

So per your intended solution, I have to use the desktop app to turn off autoplay in the Web Player. Why not just put the setting in the web player?!

Because that'd be too easy 😂

Just downloaded and tried latest Desktop app for Macbook dated 25th November with no upgrade from the Autoplay toggle issue.  As a paying Premium customer I really dont want to listen to music I have no interest in.  Why is Spotify SO SLOW at upgrading anything.  Have been waiting for Spotify HiFi for months with no official announcements since the initial vague suggestion it was coming.  Patience will only last so long.

So... still waiting for an update to be available. What's happening?

I just want to play an album front to back and then not have the next album chosen for me. And the solution is to install the desktop app, which I've never used, and change the settings in there? Why not just make the settings available on the webplayer? Who's bad idea was this?

A new announcement was posted in this idea here earlier but I will explain it in more detail below:

[AutoPlay] Option to toggle Autoplay on/off across all devices/platforms (Announcement post)

In the new Spotify desktop app version 1.1.74 there is a NEW setting to turn OFF autoplay on connected devices and the Web Player. A connected device is a device you play to and control through the Spotify app with the Connect feature. (like a speaker) This setting is currently only available in the desktop app, but it will be coming to the mobile app too in a future update. You can enable / disable it in the desktop app right now and it will work the same in the mobile app for connected devices.

The setting acts as a global account setting. Once you enable or disable it in either the desktop app or the mobile app, it will apply to your account and any app you use to play music to connected devices should update to use the same desired setting.

This is what the setting looks like in the desktop app:

Note: It can take several minutes for the autoplay setting change to apply to your account and be reflected in the other Spotify apps. One you enable it in one of the Spotify apps, it can take up to 15 minutes to sync the setting to the other Spotify apps.

This new desktop app version 1.1.74 is still being rolled out to all users so you might not have it yet.

Web Player: This setting when enabled or disabled also applies to the Web Player. The Web Player does not have a settings page and is not technically a connected device, but this setting will also be used to control the behavior of autoplay with the Web Player.

Mobile App: This setting is currently only available in the desktop app, but it will be coming to the mobile app too in a future update. It's a global account setting so you can enable or disable autoplay in the desktop app and it will take affect in the mobile app too within several minutes.

What is autoplay? When you are listening to an album or playlist with the repeat option turned off, similar music is added to your queue to keep the music going after the album or playlist has finished. This new setting turns that behavior either on or off.

Enforced auto play = finding a new music provider for nighttime, I don't want music playing all night.

finally. i still don't see how that 'feature' made its way out into the public. glad its been dealt with though.

Has anyone actually installed this new version 1.1.74? I am starting to think  it might be vapour-ware!

Even still directly from spotify website, so direct-download,  install is still 1.1.73.

I know they said the new version is 'rolling out slowly'. but wth are you using? Commodore 64's and dial-up modems?

Have just updated to Spotify for macOS (Apple Silicon) 1.1.73.517 which seems to be effective.  Awaiting opportunity to upgrade to 1.1.74.
