[Desktop] Restore Cache Location Specification

I run on a machine with a small SSD for my OS and critical applications.

In previous versions of Spotify I have set my cache to my larger hard drive. Now this is no longer possible.

Now I am constantly having to manually clear my cache and am unable to specify where I want the files to be kept.

This needs to be restored.

Updated: 2015-07-08

Hey everyone, this feature is returning in the 1.0.9 Desktop update. That update is currently rolling out and should reach everyone quite soon.

Still no update after over a year despite a lot of complaints on this thread.

Guys, is there any way to escalate the issue to make it visible to Spotify community managers ? Because right now, it feels like shouting in the wind.

I set the cache-folder to "...AppData\Local\Spotify\Data" , so on every program-start \Data will be cleared.

With this setting the only loss is offline-mode.

Apparently, in addition to the cache folder problem that is not sorted out to this day, Spotify also writes a ton of junk data on your C-drive which is nowadays usually an SSD drive. This can cause you SSD to wear out faster than it normally should since the drive deteriorates at a higher speed with all the writing and deleting of said junk data. More info here: http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2016/11/for-five-months-spotify-has-badly-abused-users...

Also, Photoshop has had working cache relocation setting for god knows how many years, the earliest I remember being Creative Suite 3 back in the mid 2000's. So how come isn't Spotify able to fix this problem?

tomsag

Solved this problem PERMANENTLY by creating a Junction from CMD prompt (as Admin!)

enter this: mklink /j C:\Users\tom\AppData\Local\Spotify\Data D:\Spotifycache

(first please change the directory "tom" to your appropriate folder name).

Before this delete (or copy everything) from the C:\Users\"YOUR USERNAME"\AppData\Local\Spotify\Data

AND delete the "..\Data" folder (it must not exist before creating the Junction file).

Where is that 1.0.9 update? I just installed it today and am at 1.0.57

So are we ever going to get a proper setting for where CACHED songs are stored? I don't do offline playlists on my computer, so I'm still stuck with 15 gigs of wasted space on my SSD for all of the stuff I've listened to. Seriously, this isn't difficult and should require all of ten minutes of work.

Have you tried my solution for this problem?

" . set the cache-folder to "...AppData\Local\Spotify\Data" , so on every
program-start \Data-folder will be cleared.
With this setting the only loss is offline-mode"

Thanks n8aktiv, I appreciate everyone's various workarounds for this, but the problem is that Spotify has had at least 3 years to fix this the proper way and they still haven't.

I tried tomsag way, but by adding the quote mark mklink /j "C:\Users\YOUR USERNAME\AppData\Local\Spotify\Data" "D:\Spotifycache" and finally succeeded 🙂  I use windows 10
Thanks tomsag 😉

tomsag's method worked (as others have noted) - Windows 7. Also, I could not find a cache folder setting anywhere 2018-07-22. My data folder was over 10GB - ouch!
