[Desktop] Restore Cache Location Specification

I run on a machine with a small SSD for my OS and critical applications.

In previous versions of Spotify I have set my cache to my larger hard drive. Now this is no longer possible.

Now I am constantly having to manually clear my cache and am unable to specify where I want the files to be kept.

This needs to be restored.

Updated: 2015-07-08

Hey everyone, this feature is returning in the 1.0.9 Desktop update. That update is currently rolling out and should reach everyone quite soon.

Hey ... I think maybe this is why my close-to-death HDD got sudden death few days ago?

~___~

I was using my new HDD as all storage

and was quite lazy moving the OS from my close-to-death HDD to a new one ...

so ... the all new spotify was using the close-to-death HDD ....

And maybe after it upgraded itself , and starts using somewhere in my close-to-death HDD as cache ?

And I was using spotify more frequently lately ...

And finally this gave it a final ......... strike? ><

sigh...

anyway , I still really want this feature back ASAP!!
< the feature can decide where to store Spotify cache >

plz ~~~

It's been exactly a month now since this topic has been brought up and nothing has happend. Could you at least give us an update on when to expect the feature to return?

A week, a month, a year, never?

Come on! You could at least pretend that you care for your customers...

I've tlaked to support team. they answer (after some ranting to the premium support email, the first emails were more like "we don't give a crap about your problems, don't bother us anymore") were : We don't have a clue about when will be fix all this bugs and actually we didn't even now about it.

So don't get your hopes up, most probably it will be never.

I'm looking for other alternatives as right now.

The removal of this in the age where SSD is starting to blowup is mindbogglingly. Who in their right mind would think:

  • Manager: You know what, lets remove the possibility to change where our huge cache storage is placed
  • Dev: But wait what about people with SDDs, that storage is expansive do we really want to add music files that most users will not even know.
  • Manager: SURE f our customers.

I didnt see anyone post this so i migth as well.

You can make an MKlink as a temporary fix (thats what i did)

just copy and paste this in to a command prompt (you can find it by hitting "windows key" + "R" or going to the startmeny/screen and type "cmd")

"mklink /d C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Spotify\Storage G:\Musikk\Storage"

You can replace the "G:\musikk\storage" with where ever else you want it to save your music. (Eg. "D:\spotifymusic" or whatever)

Here's a video on it if you want more details

There is a manual solution (Windows):

1. Close Spotify app

2. Go to:
C:\Users\YOUR_WINDOWS_USER_NAME\AppData\Roaming\Spotify

3. Open "prefs" file in text editor (just don't use Windows Notepad it messes line's endings). Use Sublime Text editor for example.

4. Add these lines:

storage.size=30720
storage.location="F:\\Spotify.CACHE"

First line is maximu size in MB, 1024MB = 1GB
Second is path to cache, change it to whatever you want just remember about double \\ instead of single. For example D:\\Music\\Spotify

Hope that helps.

Where on earth on the song files for the ones that are downloaded, from enabling "Offline" for the playlist anyway?? I can't find them for the life of me.

There was a new update but this still isn't fixed. So as I said, I cancelled my subscription. I don't care so much for other bugs and crazy stuff what happens with Spotify but the ability to set the cache location was actually VERY important. It's basic stuff, what the hell were you thinking?! Bye.

"Hey folks, this feature will be returning in a future update of the Desktop app. We'll update you here when we have more news. Thanks!"

LIAR - its been 6 weeks since that post, and we've had the "future update" already - with this still missing.

"lies, damned lies and spotify promises"

are you counting the lost customers - you should be

WTF?!

Sorry, but Spotify seems to love to remove good and helpful features...

Why did they removed that? Offline cache is useless now because I've a SSD with less space and a big harddrive...
