[Discover] Exclude selected Playlists from Taste Profile and Discover Suggestions

I play music off Spotify for my bubba to fall asleep to. This is typically classical/meditative relaxing style tracks. Since she sleeps 4 times a day this type of music is getting a LOT of playtime but is not representative of my music taste. I'm finding my Discover Weekly (which I LOVE by the way) is moving more away from my music and more towards the classical/chill out stuff I play for the little one.

Would be super cool to be able to mark a playlist to exclude it from the Discover algorithm.

Thanks!

Hey folks,

Thanks for coming to the Spotify Idea Exchange and voting to make this happen.

We're happy to announce that Exclude from Taste Profile feature is now available on all platforms. There's more info about the topic in our Newsroom Article.

If you'd like to give it a try right now, follow the steps below:

  1. Select the playlist of your choice.
  2. Tap the three dots near the top of the playlist.
  3. Select “Exclude from your Taste Profile.”

Once again, thanks for helping us make Spotify better, by participating here on the Community 🙂

Dear Jesus (/spotify) please do this. I've been thinking of it for months but today I finally cracked today when my entire discover weekly was slow cinematic orchestral music, thanks to the concentration playlists I listen to while working. This is doing my t1ts in. thanks for the help.

Strongly agree with this suggestion. Please, Spotify!

Not having this functionality is driving me away from the platform. I have to use a different app for sleep sounds, because the "private session" function is too annoying to use.

I just want to chime in and say that this would be fantastic. I have tinnitus so I sleep with crickets sounds every night. I used to have amazing Discover Weekly playlists, but since I've made this my nightly routine my Discover Weekly playlists for the last 4-5 months have been nothing but meditative music and white noise. Very frustrating, as I used to be excited to check my Discover Weekly playlist every week but now it's dead to me.

I discovered a piece of music via Spotify that I love and now listen to each night to fall asleep. However, I don't want it to influence my Discovery profile as bedtime is the only occasion I want that style of music. So I've actually had to buy that piece of music separately on Google Play and not listen to it through Spotify at all - which really defeats a lot of the point of having a paid Spotify account. Not being able to exclude specific playlists or songs from the algorithm is really annoying.

In response to your comment closing the duplicate "Studysession" suggestion, I would like to point out that the oft-requested exclusion feature is NOT the same as the Private Session feature. Though most posters are only explicitly referring to Discover Weekly, without mentioning the Daily Mixes, we can assume that they mean both. In the description of private listening, linked in your reply, is this disclaimer: "Note: Anything you play privately may still factor into some of the personalized mixes we make for you (but not Discover Weekly)."

I don't want this. I don't think any of us want this. We're looking for a function that would completely disconnect the special-case tracks we're listening to from Spotify's taste-tracking. Whether that's a playlist, or a checkbox, or some other function, is secondary to the ideal scenario of Spotify truly ignoring the music we're playing for special situations.

Exact same issue here ! I listen to a playlist at work to focus, but would want to exclude it from my DW recommandations. Help !

I am a musician. I am in cover bands, and i teach, so I'm using spotify a LOT as a work tool. which means that I'm getting a lot of reccomendations based on the twenty times/week i had to listen to a song to learn a tricky part. (maybe that's an exageration, but it's much much more than a normal person would recreationally listen to a song)

i try to use private session as much as i can remember, but it's not easy to get to, and it turns itself off after a while.

a "make private" switch on each playlist would be amazing!

I love the Discover weekly idea, but on the other hand it’s supper annoying that I do not have a way to listen to relaxing music while working or meditating. With it, I have to use other plataforms to listen to those type of music. This is new feature would be super convenient and would make my life easier. 🙂

I totally agree. The same happens to me because I like to read on the bus everyday listening to classical/jazz and other instrumental music. Since I started doing that, ALL my discovery weekly playlist became classical music. There should either be: playlists that would be hidden from the discovery algorithm or a very easy way to turn on Private Session on Spotify Mobile, without having to go deep in the settings.

Great idea!

I also listen to ambient music to focus at work or techno while training, but I'm not particularly interested in having either taking over the Discovery Weekly playlist, which I use to explore the music I enjoy the most in my free time.

My ideal solution would be connected sub-profiles or listening modes (i.e. "At Work", "Training"), each of those serving specific recommendations.
