Implement an actual shuffle function

Yes, you read that right.  The "shuffle" function in Spotify is nothing more than a randomizer.  There's a difference?  YES.

RANDOM - Play one song.  The next song can be ANY song in your playlist.  Including the one you just listened to.  Though I've never had this specifically happen, I literally just heard the same song that I heard 2 songs ago.  This is how Spotify's "shuffle" currently functions.

SHUFFLE - Take your entire list, shuffle them (like cards), and play the first song in the shuffle.  Once finished, move that song off the pile.  Once the pile is depleted, shuffle the deck again and start over (maybe pop a message up).

I know enough about programming (not much) to know that shuffling is probably a bit harder than random, but come on.  I may be in the minority, but I don't have a lot of little playlists.  I have one list with nearly a thousand songs in it, because I like all the music, and am rarely not in the mood for one of those songs.  But what I can't stand is hearing the same song over and over again.  I think there may even be songs in my list I haven't heard yet, while I've heard others 4-5 times.

I know it may not matter much, but I would probably lay down the money for at least a year subscription if this feature was implemented.

EDIT: Another user pointed out that I can see what all is queued up in my shuffle by clicking the Play Queue link, and that Spotify supposedly sets up a rolling shuffle of 50 songs.  It would be nice if this range could be expanded to say 50-100% of your playlist.

EDIT 4/6/12: I just dealt with the same song 16 tracks later.  The song played the first time yesterday afternoon.  I went home, listened for a bit on my home PC (just a few songs), then started listening again this morning.  If the list recycles itself after a day, or if you log in from another computer, I see that as an area for improvement.

Updated: 2016-02-05

Hey folks, we have made some improvements to our shuffle algorithm that we are turning on as a default for all users. We'd love your feedback on how your shuffle experience changes after today (Feb 5, 2016). Thanks for your feedback, your comments are essential to helping us improve Spotify.

Update Aug 2018:

Hi folks, it sounds like quite a few of you are experiencing only the top tracks in a playlist shuffling/ playing when using Connect. This has already been reported here.

We’ve given a transparent status there explaining there isn’t a current timeline for a fix. Please do leave a VOTE there if you’re experiencing the issue and a comment. We can then bring this information back internally to show the size of the issue for our users.

If however you are experiencing issues with Shuffle when not using Connect, please get back to us in this thread we've the questions we've listed and click +VOTE. Thank you!

Better lower your expectations, this is been happening for years now, and they didn't resolve it.

Hey it’s 2018, two years after the shuffle was fixed, and it still sucks.

Only a select few artists/songs will play at a time.

It is truly ridiculous how bad the shuffle is. I wish Spotify would spend
less time and effort trying to recruit new subscribers and more on
improving the service for their current customers. I'd be willing to pay
more if there was actual improvements made on a regular basis that applied
to ALL platforms - including PC/Mac.

Please re-open this ticket, it is not resolved.

My guess would be to limit the playlist shuffel to 1000 (or unlimited)

Im off to Apple Music. I have waited long enough. To have them not address a simple solution like this is mind boggling.

Nobody in Spotify reads this, we need no to hold our breath

I thank everyone in the several forums of this saga for showing me the many intricacies of getting the Spotify shuffle to work-- Whilst we wait and wait and wait . . . .

The last many pages of this saga have taught me to do the following.

* Do NSLB (No Song Left Behind) in an external processor, such as Excel-- I simply pull from my functional 0.9.15.27 Spotify player a snapshot of my current whole 106K track AllOfSpotify library-- Then I delete from that current snapshot each track that already has been broadcast to my central AllOfSpotify_Radio NSLB (No Song Left Behind) feed within the last 60 days-- or whatever other timeframe I choose.

* Then as I play from that NSLB feed, I delete what has played from the top-- And periodically refill that NSLB feed to 9K tracks by appending unplayed tracks to the bottom of the NSLB AllOfSpotify_Radio feed.

* And I find that-- as reported-- the Windows 10 desktop Spotify player 1.0.86.337 works perfectly in shuffling that NSLB feed-- I just have to start the Spotify shuffle playing by double-clicking on some eyeballed random track inside the playlist feed-- That green "Play" button-- immediately below the Album art at the top of the playlist-- works right only after the Spotify shuffle has already been initialized and verified as working.

The many pages of this saga have suggested the following Shuffle diagnostics that I find useful.

* If you click on the lower left corner of the AlbumArt at the lowerLeft of the Spotify player-- and if the Spotify shuffle has not broken-- then the Spotify 1.0.86.337 player will display-- in the middle-- the playlist that you are shuffling with the AlbumArt_PlayingTrack highlighted in the playlist that you are shuffling.

* If the above diagnostic displays anything other than the AlbumArt_PlayingTrack in the shuffled playlist-- maybe erroneously the [Album and tracks] from the ArtistPage-- or maybe the Discovery page or maybe some playlist that is not even yours-- then you have broken your Spotify shuffle again by just doing some normal Move, delete, add, restart, or sample operations somewhere in your network of Spotify players.  As an example, using your mobile, webPlayer, Chromecast, or AppleCarPlay almost always breaks your Spotify desktop shuffle-- There are bugs in the Spotify players and in the SpotifyConnect_function as specified elsewhere.

* Use only your isolated desktop player if you want to shuffle more than 200 tracks in a satisfactory fashion that randomizes all 9K tracks in your playlist.  Often going to your Spotify account and clicking the "Sign out everywhere" button at the bottom of your account page will terminate the connected sessions that are breaking your Spotify shuffle and making artists, tracks, or tiny 200-- or even smaller-- track subsets of your playlist repeat over and over beyond your control.

How do I get the command "Google: shuffle my playlist StuffILike" to perform all of those diagnostic options.

I'm sorry but if anything other than pressing, or asking for, shuffle is required then it does not work.

When you select the random function in a playlist, it continues to play in a preset random order, which is repeated throughout the playlist playback, when you can actually play the songs in random mode. The pseudorandom function can help you mix the songs so that they do not repeat in the same way each time you play the playlist. Using unique factors from each device as a random sensor, the shuffle function would be implemented, making the play mode of the songs really random every time they listen to playlsit again.

Is there anybody that is trying to found an other platform than Spotify to do the same thing but with an actual NSLB because I want to switch to a premium kind of app and... Spotify is great for the amount of track and other stuff but the shuffle is drowning thoses greats thing... and well ... I'm trying Deezer but, they have such a little library of track ... even if the shuffle is better, i don't think i can go there if they hav 50% of my spotify tracks...

And because spotify obvously don't want to bring a better shuffle... I don't know what to do...
