Implement an actual shuffle function

Yes, you read that right.  The "shuffle" function in Spotify is nothing more than a randomizer.  There's a difference?  YES.

RANDOM - Play one song.  The next song can be ANY song in your playlist.  Including the one you just listened to.  Though I've never had this specifically happen, I literally just heard the same song that I heard 2 songs ago.  This is how Spotify's "shuffle" currently functions.

SHUFFLE - Take your entire list, shuffle them (like cards), and play the first song in the shuffle.  Once finished, move that song off the pile.  Once the pile is depleted, shuffle the deck again and start over (maybe pop a message up).

I know enough about programming (not much) to know that shuffling is probably a bit harder than random, but come on.  I may be in the minority, but I don't have a lot of little playlists.  I have one list with nearly a thousand songs in it, because I like all the music, and am rarely not in the mood for one of those songs.  But what I can't stand is hearing the same song over and over again.  I think there may even be songs in my list I haven't heard yet, while I've heard others 4-5 times.

I know it may not matter much, but I would probably lay down the money for at least a year subscription if this feature was implemented.

EDIT: Another user pointed out that I can see what all is queued up in my shuffle by clicking the Play Queue link, and that Spotify supposedly sets up a rolling shuffle of 50 songs.  It would be nice if this range could be expanded to say 50-100% of your playlist.

EDIT 4/6/12: I just dealt with the same song 16 tracks later.  The song played the first time yesterday afternoon.  I went home, listened for a bit on my home PC (just a few songs), then started listening again this morning.  If the list recycles itself after a day, or if you log in from another computer, I see that as an area for improvement.

Updated: 2016-02-05

Hey folks, we have made some improvements to our shuffle algorithm that we are turning on as a default for all users. We'd love your feedback on how your shuffle experience changes after today (Feb 5, 2016). Thanks for your feedback, your comments are essential to helping us improve Spotify.

Update Aug 2018:

Hi folks, it sounds like quite a few of you are experiencing only the top tracks in a playlist shuffling/ playing when using Connect. This has already been reported here.

We’ve given a transparent status there explaining there isn’t a current timeline for a fix. Please do leave a VOTE there if you’re experiencing the issue and a comment. We can then bring this information back internally to show the size of the issue for our users.

If however you are experiencing issues with Shuffle when not using Connect, please get back to us in this thread we've the questions we've listed and click +VOTE. Thank you!

2 quick things - sending me to your personal Last Fm profile, not helping; second of all if you had bothered to read the entire post I expleained the whole situation about the randomiser sites. 100% could not be a worse at paying attention to an issue to troll.

Hey, I have an issue and I was directed here because of "recent changes" but this post is over a year old. I'll repost my original description of the problem here i guess.

Whenever I shuffle there are always the same few songs at the end of my playlist. I don't mind if if it's not completely random but when nothing changes after multiple shuffles it's really annoying. I've noticed this when shuffling artists too. There are slight variations and I don't really mind related songs being together but always being at the end is annoying. In general it seems the more I've listened to a song the lower it will be. Once i shuffled 5 songs for for ten minutes and two songs never came up.
Thanks for reading, this is just really annoying.

I cannot believe this has still not been fixed. It has been an issue for so long now! It is such a joke that a simple feature like this cannot be fixed in an update.

It is not as if shuffling a whole song list is a groundbreaking idea or something new! All other music apps that I have used past and present have been capable of this basic function.

Pull your finger out Spotify and sort it.

Hi! Still my Spotify Premium is playing the same CDs in my playlist  time after time. Am I doing something wrong or is the same problem still not solved? I would like to hear all my track sind,  please!

It eventually play random songs, but all of a sudden it only plays songs with artists starts with the same letter or letters near by in the alphabet. It also sometimes only plays songs with numbers in the songtitle. And yes, i've tried to push the random button and also tried to sort by artist, custom etc.. would love to get an algorithm that actually works all the time

Today I found Shuffly in the Playstore. The pro version shuffles all the tracks in a playlist. It costs about €3.50,  but it works on my Android phone. Let's hope I finally solved the problem now!

There's 105 pages of comments here yet this is still an issue.  I've been a paying member of spotify since 9/2/2011 and while this has gotten slightly better, it's a huge pain.  I don't want any 3rd party software/code - I want spotify to address the problem.  Why is it so hard for them to address??  iTunes allows you to adjust how shuffle is configured but you get nothing here.  Spotify FIX THIS please!  I find myself listening to Pandora sometimes so I can listen to songs that I haven't heard in months that are in my songs library.  Meanwhile I'll hear the same songs over and over in shuffle.  UGH!

Spotify shows this idea as 'Solved', but it's far from fixed.  The original thread has 105 pages of comments with people commenting daily.  Clearly, this is not solved.  Songs shouldn't repeat 1, 5, 50, or 100, or 1,000 songs later when you have 8,000+ songs in your playlist (or shuffling your entire song library).  If you have a playlist 20,000 songs long, why can't you click shuffle and that queue of songs is cached until it reaches the end of the playlist?

Apparently, the fix that was implemented in Feb 2016, the queue is about 1,000 songs long no matter the size of the playlist and the queue refreshes each day.  That's not a solution that prevents songs from constantly repeating!  Fix this problem, please!
