Implement an actual shuffle function

Yes, you read that right.  The "shuffle" function in Spotify is nothing more than a randomizer.  There's a difference?  YES.

RANDOM - Play one song.  The next song can be ANY song in your playlist.  Including the one you just listened to.  Though I've never had this specifically happen, I literally just heard the same song that I heard 2 songs ago.  This is how Spotify's "shuffle" currently functions.

SHUFFLE - Take your entire list, shuffle them (like cards), and play the first song in the shuffle.  Once finished, move that song off the pile.  Once the pile is depleted, shuffle the deck again and start over (maybe pop a message up).

I know enough about programming (not much) to know that shuffling is probably a bit harder than random, but come on.  I may be in the minority, but I don't have a lot of little playlists.  I have one list with nearly a thousand songs in it, because I like all the music, and am rarely not in the mood for one of those songs.  But what I can't stand is hearing the same song over and over again.  I think there may even be songs in my list I haven't heard yet, while I've heard others 4-5 times.

I know it may not matter much, but I would probably lay down the money for at least a year subscription if this feature was implemented.

EDIT: Another user pointed out that I can see what all is queued up in my shuffle by clicking the Play Queue link, and that Spotify supposedly sets up a rolling shuffle of 50 songs.  It would be nice if this range could be expanded to say 50-100% of your playlist.

EDIT 4/6/12: I just dealt with the same song 16 tracks later.  The song played the first time yesterday afternoon.  I went home, listened for a bit on my home PC (just a few songs), then started listening again this morning.  If the list recycles itself after a day, or if you log in from another computer, I see that as an area for improvement.

Update Aug 2018:

Hi folks, it sounds like quite a few of you are experiencing only the top tracks in a playlist shuffling/ playing when using Connect. This has already been reported here.

We’ve given a transparent status there explaining there isn’t a current timeline for a fix. Please do leave a VOTE there if you’re experiencing the issue and a comment. We can then bring this information back internally to show the size of the issue for our users.

I do repeat: This week I put Shuffly on my mobile phone and the problem is solved. It shuffles a complete playlist (pro version) and makes a new playlist. Open Spotify. Choose that playlist and enjoy your music.

But I agree: Spotify should have solved this problem after all these years! A shame !

We're finding it seems to take the 1st 50 or so songs and suffle play between those. Got a playlist which is over 16 hrs and are hearing repeats during a work day.

Playing from Spotify Android client, casting to a Chromecast Audio.

This shuffle feature isn't really fit for purpose.

Still a huge issue, Spotify. When will this be addressed?

I know I'm not alone here, but I make the effort to favorite songs so that I can enjoy my curated, all-inclusive playlist with a sense of pride. It's incredibly frustrating to hear the same ~50 songs, even in the same order, in a playlist of over 2,000. Totally defeats the purpose of favoriting songs.

This is a feasible request. Please fix it.

Still experiencing issues of having the same artists/30 songs being shuffled. Rather frustrating.

What is the status on a fix or new shuffle function implementation?

I have complained several times about the shuffle on this app and it's gotten to the point where I will re download all 3,000 of my songs and switch to Apple Music just so the shuffle will be fixed. Just because I listen to a new song that I love that doesn't mean that I don't want to hear it again until the end of my long playlists!! The songs are always in the same exact order which defeats the whole purpose of having shuffle!! This is my last time complaining because I love everything else about Spotify but if nothing changes soon I will make the switch!

At the risk of sounding like a broken record (ha, cause it's a music app): the shuffle feature needs fixing.

I'm having the opposite problem - I'm not hearing *enough* repeat songs.

I've been listening to the new Gorillaz album a lot recently, but now I want to listen to the new tracks mixed in with the rest of their catalogue. So I shuffle my new, improved Gorillaz playlist - and *all twenty* tracks from the new album are back-to-back at the end!!

If I'm listening to a playlist on shuffle, I want it to shuffle that playlist! I don't want to hear everything except the album I've been listening to in a random order, followed by the album I've been listening to in a random order.

I have been creating playlists for myself of hundreds of songs but when I shuffle them it seems to only be the 1st amount of them over and over again. I would like to see it so when shuffle a playlist it will put them in a completely random order and have a chance to listen to it in any order rather than just the same chunk over and over again. When you make a playlist of a few hundred songs with this new system it's almost impossible to listen to some at the end unless you have many free hours on your hands

I have a playlist consisting of 101 hours worth of songs. i listen for anywhere form a half and hour to two hours aday. how come most of the same music keeps playing everyday although its on shuffle? i have to constantly skip. Thanks -Joe ramah (Play list is called "A Joe Ramah Road Trip")

hollybuller
