Implement an actual shuffle function

Yes, you read that right.  The "shuffle" function in Spotify is nothing more than a randomizer.  There's a difference?  YES.

RANDOM - Play one song.  The next song can be ANY song in your playlist.  Including the one you just listened to.  Though I've never had this specifically happen, I literally just heard the same song that I heard 2 songs ago.  This is how Spotify's "shuffle" currently functions.

SHUFFLE - Take your entire list, shuffle them (like cards), and play the first song in the shuffle.  Once finished, move that song off the pile.  Once the pile is depleted, shuffle the deck again and start over (maybe pop a message up).

I know enough about programming (not much) to know that shuffling is probably a bit harder than random, but come on.  I may be in the minority, but I don't have a lot of little playlists.  I have one list with nearly a thousand songs in it, because I like all the music, and am rarely not in the mood for one of those songs.  But what I can't stand is hearing the same song over and over again.  I think there may even be songs in my list I haven't heard yet, while I've heard others 4-5 times.

I know it may not matter much, but I would probably lay down the money for at least a year subscription if this feature was implemented.

EDIT: Another user pointed out that I can see what all is queued up in my shuffle by clicking the Play Queue link, and that Spotify supposedly sets up a rolling shuffle of 50 songs.  It would be nice if this range could be expanded to say 50-100% of your playlist.

EDIT 4/6/12: I just dealt with the same song 16 tracks later.  The song played the first time yesterday afternoon.  I went home, listened for a bit on my home PC (just a few songs), then started listening again this morning.  If the list recycles itself after a day, or if you log in from another computer, I see that as an area for improvement.

Hey everyone,

We wanted to add some more context to the changes that have taken place in case anyone stumbles upon this idea. We've introduced the Fewer Repeats shuffling option, which takes your recent listening history into account and can be found in Settings - Playback - Shuffle mode. Check out this For the Record post for more info.

Once again, thanks for helping us make Spotify better, by participating here on the Community!

So, it seems that at least one person verbally is in favour of implementing a legacy random play option and I can bet several others that have given up on this thread will have done so. Unfortunately I am blind or have not earned the right to create a thread so if someone  else wants to raise the sugestion of a legacy random play mode people can use while the algorithmic magic is tuned to the relevant level of eel tongues and goat psncreas that would be good.

Or just tell me what I am missing for raising a new issue myself. I think it is rank based and I am rated newb.

Cheers

Local, you mean on a PC? No it can't and at least in my case I would not like it to. I don't want to have all the ripped or purchased in electronic version files synced with a mobile.

And for all Google Play music content you can choose which ones you want to have offline.

00Sorry for the off-topic and talking about alternative streaming services. (If Spotify would just implement a working shuffle function there wouldn't be much less reason to...)

@AdamDo Thanks for your answer. So Google Play doesn't seem an alternative for me as this feature is essential for me. I have some songs as mp3 which aren't listed in the Spotify catalogue (at all or in my country) and I want to listen to them on phone, too. (And I take care of only have access to them and not to mp3s of songs in the catalogue after learning Spotify will play your local files on PC instead of streaming then so you sometimes end up hearing a bad rip and the artist earns nothing 😠

I just started experiencing this new “algorithm” about a couple days ago and I absolutely hate it.

everytime I hit shuffle play, only the first 200 songs of my library get played.

i have almost 3000 songs saved and it doesn’t matter if I sort by “recently added” or “title” it will only shuffle play the first 200.

if I select a song that isn’t the first 200, it will play 200 songs around the song I choose

so when it’s sorted by title, it plays songs that start with numbers and a-b.

if I select song title that starts with a “p”

it will play 200 song that start with n, o, and p.

same thing with recently added. It will only play the 200 songs that are around the on I select.

this is only happening on my iPhone though not on PC

i hope the “algorithm” gets removed because it’s not worth paying for this kind of service

The same happens to me! And I was told that’s a new way of playing the songs.

It’s terrible!

All I want ...play the entire library in shuffle mode!

Looking for a way to shuffle through diffrent parts of one playlist (different subsections all within one playlist) without repeats.

Details:

I'm using Spotify to DJ huge party. (Love this feature!!) The first part of the party will be music that is groovy/funky. As people filter in, I want to set the vibe. The second part will be dance/upbeat. The third will be more like the first part but with more of an "after party"/ slower dance music (the kind of music you dance to after 4+ drinks and think you're an awesome dancer).

I'm looking for a feature where I can combine more than one vibe into one playlist, but still be able to shuffle through each before it makes it to the next vibe. Currently, I have to make 3 separate playlists--or play songs in a certain order to avoid repeating songs. It is a problem I'm facing as I put together these 3 playlists.

Thanks!

Lauren

Cancelled my subscription and joined Apple Music today.  I will not rejoin unless this is fixed.

Looks like it still doesn't work with Google Home I'm afraid.
