Implement an actual shuffle function

Yes, you read that right.  The "shuffle" function in Spotify is nothing more than a randomizer.  There's a difference?  YES.

RANDOM - Play one song.  The next song can be ANY song in your playlist.  Including the one you just listened to.  Though I've never had this specifically happen, I literally just heard the same song that I heard 2 songs ago.  This is how Spotify's "shuffle" currently functions.

SHUFFLE - Take your entire list, shuffle them (like cards), and play the first song in the shuffle.  Once finished, move that song off the pile.  Once the pile is depleted, shuffle the deck again and start over (maybe pop a message up).

I know enough about programming (not much) to know that shuffling is probably a bit harder than random, but come on.  I may be in the minority, but I don't have a lot of little playlists.  I have one list with nearly a thousand songs in it, because I like all the music, and am rarely not in the mood for one of those songs.  But what I can't stand is hearing the same song over and over again.  I think there may even be songs in my list I haven't heard yet, while I've heard others 4-5 times.

I know it may not matter much, but I would probably lay down the money for at least a year subscription if this feature was implemented.

EDIT: Another user pointed out that I can see what all is queued up in my shuffle by clicking the Play Queue link, and that Spotify supposedly sets up a rolling shuffle of 50 songs.  It would be nice if this range could be expanded to say 50-100% of your playlist.

EDIT 4/6/12: I just dealt with the same song 16 tracks later.  The song played the first time yesterday afternoon.  I went home, listened for a bit on my home PC (just a few songs), then started listening again this morning.  If the list recycles itself after a day, or if you log in from another computer, I see that as an area for improvement.

Hey everyone,

We wanted to add some more context to the changes that have taken place in case anyone stumbles upon this idea. We've introduced the Fewer Repeats shuffling option, which takes your recent listening history into account and can be found in Settings - Playback - Shuffle mode. Check out this For the Record post for more info.

Once again, thanks for helping us make Spotify better, by participating here on the Community!

The shuffle feature still sucks

MouldyGoldie

For a while I've been noticing that when I play my playlist on shuffle, it only plays the most recent songs - it's about 700 songs long, yet I hear the same 50 or 100 all the time. I have now learnt that this is because I sort my playlists by 'recently added' rather than by title, or artist etc.

Why should the shuffle function only work if you order your playlists in an inefficient way (in my opinion). Spotify should sort this out so, no matter how your playlists are ordered, the shuffle feature is actually random and plays all the songs in your playlist.

The shuffle feature is not fixed. As of right now there is absolutely no native function to play a playlist in random order. Spotify's shuffle has a hierarchy and tries to more frequently play songs you've already played frequently, AKA THE BURNOUT FEATURE.
Spotify single-handedly ruins songs by overplaying them ad nauseum. I will sometimes shuffle a playlist and hear one song THREE TIMES in one sitting while there are still songs on the playlist I havent heard in ages.

So after thousands of comments of how the shuffle does not work... Spotify obviously ignores it.... I will now be changing to Tidal, and trying it out, and exporting my playlists using https://soundiiz.com/  I have given them more than a year to fix it, but it's still doesn't work... Many times I can guess which song will be next because of their "smart" shuffle... anyway I encourage others (where this shuffle issues has a lot of weight) to do the same...

Hi there,

The shuffle still only plays a select few songs and isn't playing everything on my play list.

Shuffle still sucks, I have seen many people post on here that in their playlists that multiple hundred songs in them the same 40-50 songs play. For me it is like the same 10 songs and it has caused me to start to find the songs I once loved and meant a lot to me to be very annoying. This is so sad and the exact opposite of what an app like Spotify should be doing. Someone explained earlier that the right kid of shuffle is where they play a song and then take it out of the queue and not replay it until all the other songs have been played. This is an awesome idea and if spotify could implement this I would love it so much more. Maybe I would even be urged to upgrade my free account that I have had for 3 years and use daily to a premium account! Major incentive over here Spotify team, so please get it together. Thank you.

This is still a problem Spotify! Shuffle does not work for the entire of my library and I only get a few songs playing!

4 years between request & solution; a year and a half after that and it still doesnt work right...I mean, being a music player IS your primary goal, why are the most basic features so hard to get fixed? Shuffle has existed for decades

okay so this shuffle absolutely sucks. it will shuffle songs that start with the same letter over and over again and I am angry. It will play the whole album within the span of 20 songs. I don’t know how you made any improvements but it sucks. Please fix it. The Apple Music shuffle is way better than this. Thank you. Have a nice day. Fix your shuffle.
