Let users turn off some or all desktop notifications, e.g. "Your friend ______ just joined Spotify."

So according to the @SpotifyCares Twitter account, there's no way at all to turn off desktop notifications. None. Which seems insane to me! Spotify is the only app that sees fit to blow up my OSX dock with notifications multiple times every week, yet there's no functionality to let me control which notifications I see - or even if I see them at all!

So, obviously:I'm proposing that Spotify let users control this! I, like most people, do not have a deep personal relationship with 100% of my Facebook friends, so I don't need to know whenever some random person I went to high school with gets Spotify. I have zero interest in sending them anything or interacting with them on Spotify in any way, so it benefits neither me nor Spotify to pop up that red notification and nag me to view it before it goes away.

Anyways, yeah! This all feels super obvious, but since the @SpotifyCares Twitter account told me to post this here, that's what I'm doing. "New idea:" STOP BUGGING ME WHEN PEOPLE I DON'T CARE ABOUT JOIN SPOTIFY. USE THE OSX DOCK NOTIFICATIONS SYSTEM RESPONSIBLY. Thank you.

Hey everyone. Now you can go to your the Notifications section of your Accounts page via Spotify.com and adjust both your in-app and email notifcations.

TURN IT OFF PLEASE!

thegooddrgoode

Please listen to your users! We're trying to help.

You have a huge head start. Don't squander it on finding the perfect shade of green. Fix these annoyances or when Apple Music buries you it will be your own fault.

SunnyLemon

Please make this happen. I often don't follow playlists just because I know I cannot turn off the notifications, and they are, to be honest, quite annoying. The idea suggested above would be an easy fix.

So this idea has already been suggested three years ago and still no change. With Windows8 and Windows10 showing notifications in the taskbar, this is getting ridiculous. The only notifications I ever get are "Spotify added a track to this playlist" and 2 minutes later "Spotify added a track to this same playlist again". Couldn't you at least bundle notifications?
I stopped using Spotify at work altogether because the notifications are distracting. I listen on mobile, at least I can ignore them there.
At home I only open Spotify when I want to play a song, I close it right away again afterwards.

The notifications feature has gone from a "hey that's neat" to a "please just leave me alone!!" pretty quickly after its introduction. And here we are, 3 years later, and still absolutely no response. Come on Spotify! We pay you enough money, go put an intern on this and have him/her fix it in half a week.

No any improvements for years?! Huh.

@Marco Why was my idea "notification filter" moved here?
Filtering and deactivating are definitely not the same thing, don't you think?

I understand that the answer this idea received will also apply to my idea in that case. Case closed?!

It's just kind of frustrating to see that people have been giving feedback on the several issues with notifications for quite a while now. I did my homework and searched for similiar ideas and so on. All in all many kudos gathered.

Can you point us to an idea, which matches the intended result in a broader term, that has been/is taken into consideration?

That's why my initial post revolved around a use case rather than an idea.

After reading through the various other ideas I might rephrase that to:

"As a user I don't want to miss a new release of an artist I follow."

How do I enter this correctly into the community process?

It's presumably not a simple "idea" but more an "issue" that is addressed by several already proposed "ideas" in the community.

How can we, as a community, approach this to be heard?

@xuno_ch Dont bother, even when you enter it correctly. They will just park it and leave it there for years just like this idea....

Xuno I can only speculate as to Spotify motivation that some market analysis says that notifications help achieve a business goal (like keeping Spotify visible to irregular users, thus ensuring they use it just enough to continue to keep 'mind share' and paying customers. As a Product Owner, I can empathize with that. I just think the original market analysis may no longer be valid. The market has changed. There's a real substitute to Spotify for Mac users. While they could have been more willing to tolerate more notifications than they want, they are now less likely to do so. As I'm typing this, I'm listening to Apple Music. I already cancelled my Spotify subscription. Now I acually think there are many things that are better with Spotify. I find it easier to stumble on a track I've never heard before and then create a plaudits of songs like it, thus opening me up to a world of new music, but notifications annoy me more than the value of that feature.

 @xuno_ch
Hey there!
I've moved it back for you as a separate topic.
My bad - it has been pointed out that it's the same as this one but apparantly not and after you've made it clear I agree. Sorry about that.

The idea you're looking for might be this one here: New releases section for artists I follow.

kalta

It is outrageous!!

Who gives you the right to steal our attention?!

I have found a solution to disable all these annoying notifications as another user suggested.

It's really easy - cancel your PRO subscription (so you don't pay it anymore) and go to http://rdio.com

More plan options (3.99 plan available) and same music without the notifications.

Spotify - learn to listen to your customers. 3 years people have been complaining!!!!
