[Mobile] Screen always on Option

When the Spotify app is in focus keep the screen on and prevent it from locking. Just like in PowerAmp, this should be an optional setting.

It's really annoying to have to unlock the phone to skip tracks, or see the name of the current song or artist, especially when driving.

Hey folks!

Thanks for coming to the Idea Exchange.

With the release of Car View, your screen will always remain on when driving - or when turning it on manually in the settings.

When you connect your phone to your car’s Bluetooth, car view automatically turns on. You see larger, driver-friendly icons in the Now Playing view, and you can quickly change what plays with Choose Music at the bottom of the screen.

For more info about listening to Spotify in the car, check out this article

Thanks!

Hey @Claretnbluefonz

There are two new settings in the Car view section of the app: Turn on automatically, and Always on.

Switching Always on will make it work without a bluetooth connection, and will keep your Screen always on. If you don't see it in your Settings, be sure to update the app to the latest version.

Hope it helps. 🙂

Car view is fine (although it looks ugly) if you have a newer car with bluetooth built in.

In my case (and from the looks of it, I'm not the only one) signal is coming from AUX (through bluetooth adapter) and I have to either manually turn the car view on and off every time I get into my car or I have to let it stay ON permanently.

Is it really that hard to put a "screen always on" switch in settings? That would've been by far easier than design the "car view". It's like going from France to Germany through China and ending up in Austria. Time and effort wasted and the end result is kind of close, but not really.

Not working for me in Car Mode via Bluetooth on iOS 13 and Spotify 8.5.23

Claretnbluefonz

I have it set up in the following way:

"Phone sits on mount on the dash

Aux to lightening cable plugs into phone"

I have no Bluetooth connectivity at all in my set up. Car mode doesn't work as the phone still locks. A few months ago it didn't happen and the phone remained unlocked. It is incredibly frustrating that this has changed and Spotify haven't done anything about it. I am also on IOS 13 and Spotify 8.5.23.644

love that this says 'implemented' as of 3 days ago when there is still a very active thread of users saying this doesn't work. an official Spotify moderator even had the gall to mark the issue as solved and reply basically 'guys, we solved it! just change the settings for your whole phone! you're *so* welcome. gosh. kthxbye!'

(if you're wondering, despite ~15 pages of users replying that it's not the solution, this is a bug Spotify created, and  CarView is now pointless since the app no longer overrides auto-lock (or even when the phone is just plugged and on the Now Playing screen) , another official Spotify moderator replied basically 'we're so glad everyone let us know! if you leave your phone specs & iOS/Spotify versions we'll see if we can figure it out and keep you informed! in the meantime we suggest wasting your time with a quick reinstall or an even more time-consuming *clean* reinstall that we know won't do the job but will mean having to re-download any playlist you already had on your device.'

did they fix it? keep us updated? change the problem back from 'resolved' even though the OP *and everyone else* said it wasn't solved? lol forever. fun bonus: last post from OP on the topic was them inquiring whether Apple Music had this problem. sure seems like users are satisfied with the responses, no? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

**maybe this 'implemented idea' is just for Android and not iPhone, but if that's the case it still shows that Spotify knows exactly what users mean when they describe this problem, and they should stop playing dumb and either offer a real fix or explain why they won't--because it sure does seem like a 'won't' at this point.

Hi @celiajean,

for sure I agree that it's wrong to put problems to solved when they ain't and to put ideas to implemented when they are not.

For me this looks like a complicated issue, different phone platforms, different car platforms, different modes, different user requirements. When a problem is fixed for one user, the other has an issue with it.

What is not clear for me, is what is really the issue for you. I propose to define the problem clearly and create a new idea, this is the only way to improve this. Also state clearly why the implemented idea isn't working for you to prevent it will be marked as duplicate.

I have an Iphone 8 using an aux to lightening cable that is docked on a wireless charging docking station sat upon the dash.

As I have previously mentioned in this thread, a few months ago I would be using Spotify and the phone would remain unlocked with the album artwork on the screen making it easy to skip the track etc. After a Spotify update, this no longer happens and the screen locks which is really frustrating. Spotify is no longer keeping the phone unlocked when being used as it did previously.

Thanks

I'm sorry to hear the issue is unclear to you, @Rene01. It isn't unclear to Spotify, though. They're aware of the issue and have ignored the users still talking about it. There is an extensive and ever-growing thread describing the problem;  I've already linked to that thread in my earlier post, though here it is again if you missed it. I don't need to start a new idea for this; disabling the auto-lock on iPhones while Spotify's Car View or Now Playing are on the screen isn't a new idea for the service; it's fixing an acknowledged problem. I don't think I need to recreate the wheel here.

Hi @celiajean,

I just checked your links and I don't see that many issues after it was implemented last week. So indeed, there are long threads but all the posts before the update don't apply anymore, since it should be fixed.

I think only 3 people had an issue, two of them were using an aux solution with iPhone, I think aux is hard to control by app developers in general, I mean, you can use it as sound input, but I don't think the app will know if he should go to car mode or if it is an aux input in the living room.

Hi,

It was working previously. If it’s now proving difficult how about a setting to not lock the screen if Spotify is playing. Then we can either have the setting off or on.
