[Social] Bring back Inbox/Messaging with Notifications

The Inbox/Messaging feature did not get a real shot at even being a feature because Spotify took away notifications for new messages. Give Inbox/Messaging some development so users can continue to privately share songs.

Updated on 2025-08-27

Hi everyone,

We're excited to announce that this feature is making a return! 😎 The new revamped Messages lets users share content directly with friends inside the Spotify app and instantly start a conversation about it.

This post goes more in-depth on the topic, make sure to check it out!

Thanks for helping us make Spotify better 💚

I don't know why they got rid of this feature. The inbox was a huge part of my enjoyment with Spotify. It expanded the feeling of listening to music to include others in a more immediate way. Now it's yet another device that isolates us/me. I really hope the messaging feature is brought back. If not, I will probably cancel my subscription.

Please please please bring this feature back! It was such a great addition to using this app for music so my friends/family could suggest music to each other. I used it daily. Please consider bringing it back!

I view Spotify as an excellent opportunity for artists to get discovered as well as for friends to connect through music. I definitely consider Spotify one of my social media outlets due to the amount that I share music with others on it, the ability to create collaboritve playlists, and the opportunity it gives to stay in touch with others through sharing music that spark memories or remind me of others I have not seen in a while. I firmly believe that eliminating the messaging and direct sharing function also eliminates the attraction of Spotify. These emerging artists are going to have a harder time being discovered due to the hassle of trying to share music now, and I can no longer use Spotify for what originally attracted me to it. I am very upset, and I know that everyone I know that uses Spotify is extremely upset, as well.

Very frustrating to not realize you have a swath of unread messages from your friends sending you music to listen to. Spotify should be endorsing this activity and not remove the feature before it gets a chance to prove itself.

This is devastating news that Spotify is has taken away the messaging platform. Instead of looking at low engagement rates, you should be asking yourself why is engagement is low? The answer is spoitfys messaging product was not up to consumers standards. In an age dominated by social engagement your messaging platform never really allowed the community to share, talk, and listen. For example, one of the things I enjoyed most about Spotify was exploring new music sent from my friends daily - however I couldnt play my inbox as a playlist. Big miss. The list goes on - it was very very manual to send songs, notifications were out of sync, and in addition the UI was cloudy as in order to see your first message you had to scroll. I suggest you bring back this product but mirror a gmail inbox interface. Bring it back!

AGREE. I came to this site to say exactly this. I used to send songs to my friends a lot and then notifications stopped working and we slowly sent less and less songs. Spotify should have a large social side of it.

Bring back notifications, the ability to send a song and also the feed for me to share songs with my followers.

Yes! Bring back 1:1 sharing WITH notifications! I've been on Spotify almost from the jump and the social aspect of the product has always been something I tout when describing the value of Spotify vs other music products.

I've noticed over the past couple years this area of the product has been deprecated and it blows my mind. When I discover music on Spotify, which is almost every day, I want to share it directly with one or a group of my friends–I don't want to have to share the song with my whole social network, via Facebook.

This was as annoying as when iTunes removed the large album artwork from the bottom-left corner and made it a tiny-**bleep** icon at the top middle. Spotify, please don't remove that next either.

My wife and I share songs with eachother all the time in Spotify. We were sad to see that we couldn't do that anymore 😞

Why would you remove the messaging feature? The social aspect was very important to me as a spotify user.
