[Social] Bring back Inbox/Messaging with Notifications

The Inbox/Messaging feature did not get a real shot at even being a feature because Spotify took away notifications for new messages. Give Inbox/Messaging some development so users can continue to privately share songs.

Updated on 2025-08-27

Hi everyone,

We're excited to announce that this feature is making a return! 😎 The new revamped Messages lets users share content directly with friends inside the Spotify app and instantly start a conversation about it.

This post goes more in-depth on the topic, make sure to check it out!

Thanks for helping us make Spotify better 💚

I used the messaging every day and it sucks that it's gone. The reason it didn't get used more by everyone is the simple lack of notification of new messages! It's a pain to constantly check to see if someone sent you anything. Add simple notification of messages received and it will take off! Bring it back!!!!

I noticed that some of my friends did not even realise there was an option to send and receive messages due to the lack of notifications. Although, when they did realise they could exchange songs, they were more active. I personally loved this feature, please bring it back

The #1 reason I started paying for a Spotify account was to send music directly to my friends. Having an inbox was the perfect way. It's far too annoying to have to do it through a third party. I hope they bring back direct messaging soon or I'll probably quit Spotify.

The inbox feature and the ability to share songs as well as playlists was my FAVORITE FEATURE about Spotify. The ease in sharing is why I subcribed to the paid version of the Spotify and I am truly considering going back to the free version because of this unexpected change. I truly missed and was frustrated that they pulled the notifications feature in the last update. I had messages and songs from my friends who live across the country just sitting there and I had no idea. The ability to share music so effortlessly was a unique feature in both the mobile and desktop comparably to other music streaming apps. It gave me flashbacks of those days when you record a cassette or burn a CD for that special someone or a girl friend that was going through a hard time. Please bring it back. It is such an utter disappointment to not be able to send one of your creative playlists to a friend of family member.

What do we need to do to bring this feature back? I will happily to be apart of the movement to bring this feature back!

Without the sharing feature, Spotify really is pretty much the same as any other streaming program. The Inbox has been tweaked, none of which have made it better, with no warning to the users - and then finally just removed. Poor form, Spotify. If they don't bring it back, I'm moving on to a different program, as that was my favorite feature of Spotify.

Well whose absolutely horrible idea was it to remove this feature? Might wanna revisit whatever analytics led you to believe no one used the Share function...perhaps do a good ole' fashion REFRESH on those Kissmetrics integration.

One of the main resons I fell in love with Spotify years ago was the ability to share songs privately with my friends.  I have been able to create shared playlists with some of my closest friends and stay connected to them by sharing music even when I live far away from many of them.  It was always nice to press play on one of their threads and listen through the music they have sent throughout the years.  I enjoyed the ability to share a song with them when I heard something that reminded me of them, or a song I though they would like.  As soon as I discovered this feature I signed up for premium, almost 3 years ago.  I am not really sure why I would continue to pay if the feature I loved about Spotify is no longer there.  Perhaps the worst part is that those playlists of memories with friends has been completely deleted.  This is extremely disapponting.

Please bring messaging back!!! I have three years of back and forth with my best friends and music soulmates on Spotify messenger. I can't lose that! Messenger is the essense of Spotify for me-- it's about sharing music directly from the platform when you think of someone. It's the most initimate, best thing about Spotify. Bring it back!!!!

I really don't know why Spotify is always trying to mess with us.

Word of mouth (Spotify Inbox/Messaging) is a crucial tool for Spotify users to seamlessly share music.  It also better supports less "Followed" artists who are coming up in the ranks; since a trusted friend-to-friend recommendation is likely to carry more influence.

Just because Spotify Inbox isn't used by the majority of users doesn't mean this feature is a waste of time.  It is an essential feature for the "power users" who use your service the most and taking it away disables their ability to find/share the best music.  After all, our friends are the ones who know our tastes best.

Text and email hyperlinks are an inappropriate and messy place for music sharing.  Please, keep us connected through the Spotify platform!
