[Social] Bring back Inbox/Messaging with Notifications

The Inbox/Messaging feature did not get a real shot at even being a feature because Spotify took away notifications for new messages. Give Inbox/Messaging some development so users can continue to privately share songs.

Updated on 2025-08-27

Hi everyone,

We're excited to announce that this feature is making a return! 😎 The new revamped Messages lets users share content directly with friends inside the Spotify app and instantly start a conversation about it.

This post goes more in-depth on the topic, make sure to check it out!

Thanks for helping us make Spotify better 💚

Sharing is caring – and you've just taken it away! Please bring it back, Spotify Team...

I am so dissapointed the inbox is gone. I used it every single day to share songs with my friends and to comment them. I think you are making a great mistake because I know many people that also used it regularly. Why would you erase a funcionality that so many users liked?

Bring this feature back, please.

What about users who have the desktop app installed on a device but they have no other means of social media to share songs via?!

E-mail may not be an option when you are using an e-mail account other than your private one...

At the end of the day there will be only one play button in spotify app and thats all.

In last years you have wiped out more functionality from your app, than I thought its possible and you keep doing that.

So are you actually updating or downgrading? Where is this app and your service going? Seems like its going to **bleep**.

Get your stuff together please and do not broke things that work.

Soundwave070 has hit on a very important point - without the social aspect of Spotify, there is very little reason to remain loyal to the brand. I'll elaborate:

with the old Spotify you could find people that similar music taste, then you could follow them and they'd get a notification (effectively a friend request) and if they liked the look of you they could follow you back. Friends. And you could share music and converse with each other. I personally have met people entirely through the platform and had musical friendships that have now been taken away.

Secondly, it was great for sharing music and instant messaging among my real life friends. So it was in my interests for as many people as possible to use Spotify and I introduced a lot of people to it. But now it no longer matters to me whether others are using Spotify or not. So there's no point me recommending it any more. And if I like the deal better on another streaming service, I might as well jump ship and use them instead.

Spotify has just deleted the musical history of me and my girlfriend's relationship. We send each other songs many times a week, often with some words of relating the song, lyrics, mood or something to our lives or relationship. The history back from when we first started talking, flirting, dating. moving together, buying a first home....all the musical history of our relationship is just gone like "that". With NO warning! None whatsoever.

No, this will not break us up, but the sweet messages and songs, the order of the songs and discography of our relationship that was stored in the inbox means a great deal to me. I loved this feature from Spotify, and some new fancy social third-party app will absolutely do nothing to redeem this loss.

PLEASE bring back this feature including the history.

I've gotten 8+ people to sign of for Spotify by using this feature to convince them. Not only will I unsubscribe if this isn't brought back, I'll certainly encourage my friends to do the same. I will never endorse you again Spotify.

So, Spotify is hiding access to everyone's message history, without warning (at least, I don't recall seeing it). Bugs happen, but this is deliberate. I can't understand how this could be considered a good idea. I think the least Spotify can do is to give read-only access to the message history.
