[Social] Bring back Inbox/Messaging with Notifications

The Inbox/Messaging feature did not get a real shot at even being a feature because Spotify took away notifications for new messages. Give Inbox/Messaging some development so users can continue to privately share songs.

Updated on 2025-08-27

Hi everyone,

We're excited to announce that this feature is making a return! 😎 The new revamped Messages lets users share content directly with friends inside the Spotify app and instantly start a conversation about it.

This post goes more in-depth on the topic, make sure to check it out!

Thanks for helping us make Spotify better 💚

I have read the other proposal, but the point is that I'm not interested in being sosial. The only reason why I was paying for Spotify, was possibility to send private massage. Private, not share it in sosial media! That I can do other places.
Besides, I think that you should warn people before you take away any feature. This was really important to me not just as a feature. This was a real correspondence. This also means that Spotify has deleted my personal correspondence without warning, personal letters, if you like. How is this possible? This is a violation of my privacy.
I will not bag you to bring it back, because I don't believe that you can bring back so valuable thing I had, unles this is stored somewhere, but I will for sure unsubscribe if massaging will be removed permanently.

For a long time the notification didn't work properly, even when someone send a music to me, My sugestion is before remove it because low engagement, try to at least improve the alerts when new messages come.

Thanks, o/

YOU GUYS! PLEASE READ THIS: yesterday, after coming here and seeing so many people with the same problem like me, I went on Facebook and found the page 'SpotifyCares' so I wrote them complaining about this issue and showing my full disappointment and they replied! Here's what they said --> "Thanks! We’ve asked the team to create a playlist just for you with all the tracks you’ve ever received to your Spotify inbox. Please note, this won’t include any accompanying messages, or any playlists or albums you received. We hope that sounds good! You should find it in Your Music > Playlists within the next few days."

I don't know what you guys think, but I still can't accept the fact that Spotify removed all of my messages, just like that. We should all try and do something about it

Please bring this back, I dont want to have to go over to apple music and transfer all my stuff 😞

Exactly, they could invest more to make it work better.
Anyway, I still think that they stole something of my life by deleting my
stuff without warning.

PLEASE bring back the message feature!

Please - I'm a middle aged guy who doesn't get out as much anymore. I loved this feature to enable me to share music with my friends, even though I rarely get to see them anymore. Sharing music is among the base reasons we pay for your service vs your competitors.

Bring it back. Re-tool it if needed, but minimally.... Spotify user to Spotify user is a core essential element.

I have been paying for ten years for spotify. All my music is lost now. All the old relationsships, everything. I want my money back! I want the right to get my playlists back! I was not notified!

I just came here to see if I could use Spotify to send my daughter a play list. I live in Australia and use iTunes/apple music, but my teenage daughter lives in the UK and uses Spotify. As a lot of Aussie music doesn't get airplay in the UK, I thought I'd sign up to Spotify to share some local music with her... and found this forum. What a disappointment for those that lost data without so much as an invitation to archive it before it was removed.

But don't lose hope people because from my experience, there seems to be enough evidence here to enable a class action for breach of contract. I haven't investigated the finer details of Spotify's T&C's, but generally a class action for damages would evolve around the following:

1) Implied-in-fact-contract: Paid subscription did include a service that was very much relied upon by the customer and the service was removed without proper notice.

2) Contra proferentum: This law encourages the drafter of a contract (Spotify) to be as clear and explicit as possible and to take into account as many foreseeable situations as it can. Contracts such as the Spotify Subscription Service are the product of bargaining between parties in unfair or uneven positions, i.e. customers have lost or are unable to retrieve data which is a) irreplaceable and b) was originally relied upon and paid for by the customer via subscription under the terms and conditions of service, but have since been removed by the contract drafter without due diligence and proper notification given to subscribers.

3) Damages for pain and suffering via breach of contract, i.e. the sentimental loss of data did have significant and intrinsic emotional value to the suscriber where their loss could have and would been avoided had Spotify acted in accordance of the terms and conditions, properly notifying subscribers of their intention thus allowing time for suscribers to get their affairs in order.

A half decent law firm could/should be able to substantiate a claim that would provide resolution to subscribers (on a no win / no fee basis). Likely outcome could be one of two scenarios:

a) Class action claim value could possibly place Spotify into unavoidable financial dificulty (bankruptcy for instance - imagine if each and every subscriber sniffed out the possibility of recieving USD$2,500.00 each from a class action claim), but most likely:

b) Force Spotify to reinstate features previously removed without warning, (albeit quite likely on a temporary basis with costs paid to claimant, i.e. the law firm) to benefit subscribers by enabling them to retrieve data that was once rightfully paid for under the original subscription services prior to the unannounced changes.

That's my 2 cents worth anyway should anyone be motivated enough to source a firm and put something together. Generally though, if a company sniffs out a class action they tend to fall in line and temprarily reverse their actions, and then go on to do it anyway, albeit without any legal ramifications.

All I know is that it's no use for me to subscribe now. Good luck people, I truly feel sorry for those that lost data through Spotify's unconscionable actions. You'd think they'd know better that to expose themselves to someting like this. I reckon someone in upper managment must be thooughly asleep on the job.

Totally agree with these folks! I've been paying for premium for 4+ years now and am beginning to think competition will be good. The social features were never built out! A social "feed" is fine... but you can't even react to what your friends are listening to. If you then like and listen to that song.. your friend doesn't know about it. You can't even "heart" a song your friend is listening to, let alone have a conversation about the song. Spotify has SO MUCH DATA about my listening habits and what they do with it is pitiful. Give me more, because I give the app all my data AND pay $9 a month. For what? Now I can't even directly send songs to my friends. I'm going to look at soundcloud next.
