[Social] Bring back Inbox/Messaging with Notifications

The Inbox/Messaging feature did not get a real shot at even being a feature because Spotify took away notifications for new messages. Give Inbox/Messaging some development so users can continue to privately share songs.

Updated on 2025-08-27

Hi everyone,

We're excited to announce that this feature is making a return! 😎 The new revamped Messages lets users share content directly with friends inside the Spotify app and instantly start a conversation about it.

This post goes more in-depth on the topic, make sure to check it out!

Thanks for helping us make Spotify better 💚

We are alone.

You know the irony here. On the Spotify community I can send a private message.

Would be nice to do that on the service I pay for.

music has traditionally been a means of storytelling and bringing people together to bond, grieve or simply be social. I can understand why Spotify has taken it away but I really think the UX needed extra attention or more integration across the platform.

The friend feed is meant to be social but doesn't allow liking or commenting - nor can we message someone about a song on the friend feed. We have the ability to see concerts in our area we can go to with our friends, but it was difficult to message or integrate friends into our concert options.

Should people want to keep their personal space that's welcomed too, but I think the conversation should be allowed if someone wants it. Music has always been a social activity and I think Spotify's platform needs to represent that.

I played around with a few integration options here if anyone wants to read more, or see UX solutions.

I just want to add my voice to the chorus asking for the return of the this feature. I've gotten multiple people to join spotify BASED ON THIS FEATURE. Being able to easily share a great new song with friends was, in my opinion, the second most important feature on spotify, after playing music.

I'm with the rest of the group. This was a great feature. I didn't use it heavily, but just tried to send an album to someone and realized it wasn't there. It was absolutely a feature that stood out to me as useful, and I had messages in my inbox dating back to 2011 I believe. Would bring back memories going back through the shared music.

I've been with Spotify since it was invite-only in the US. So just do what I say 😛

Thanks guys.

Removing the Inbox/Messaging feature amounts to a missed opportunity. We're hearing that the resources required to maintain the feature could not be justified against low use metrics. However, perhaps more people would have used this feature had the resources dedicated to this functionality listened to the community and developed relevant enhancements. Simply put, it didn't work well! Others have already pointed out some of these failings. To name a few: notifications stopped, you couldn't maintain the inbox as we would expect to (e.g., deleting messages), you can't message all of your followers (only those you are friends with on Facebook, if you've synched your accounts). Even still, clearly many of us (myself included!) really liked the concept. For me, it was a differentiator compared to other streaming services. I think the Spotify team really dropped the ball on this feature and never gave it the attention it needed to meet its potential.

I worked hard getting followers to my Artist Page, so I could get verified, and now there are 642 people following and I'm verified. But what the H*** good did it do me? The Spotify listeners are mostly diferrent from my Instagram or Twitter followers, and same with my 2000 monthly website hits. I can copy/paste to promote a release or a playlist change to those formats, but most of the fans I have that already listen to Spotify never hear about it. I really wanted to do cross-promotion between platforms, to build each of them, but that's not possible now, because what is the point of having an Artist Page follower, if I can't communicate with them within the platform? Same goes for notifications of playlist changes.

Most of your users are just listeners, and many listeners may not think its an important feature, but artists, producers, reps, and the like, find these features to be essential with probably very few exceptions. I'm sadly disappointed.

Me, too! Me, too! This was WHY I used Spotify. We pay for two accounts in our house, thinking of going elsewhere now. Bring back share!

I absolutely agree with this! PLEASE BRING THIS FEATURE BACK. It is how I shared music with my boyfriend, friends, coworkers, even my boss!

PLEASE BRING THE MESSAGE FEATURE BACK! I used this to share music with my boyfriend, friends, coworkers, even my boss and I could share music this way! I had so much great music saved there and fantastic conversations discussing the tunes. PLEASE BRING IT BACK.
