[Social] Bring back Inbox/Messaging with Notifications

The Inbox/Messaging feature did not get a real shot at even being a feature because Spotify took away notifications for new messages. Give Inbox/Messaging some development so users can continue to privately share songs.

Updated on 2025-08-27

Hi everyone,

We're excited to announce that this feature is making a return! 😎 The new revamped Messages lets users share content directly with friends inside the Spotify app and instantly start a conversation about it.

This post goes more in-depth on the topic, make sure to check it out!

Thanks for helping us make Spotify better 💚

Spotify,

You say the feature has a very low engagement, but you fail to see that it is entirely your fault. First off, the notifications were almost invisible; I know a lot of people that were not aware of the messaging option until I told them about it. But it doesn't end there, people won't look for these options unless you make the app much more social oriented, which is clearly not your objective, as you've systematically made the app less social over time.

This is a real shame, there are thousands of your users that bond with people through music. I really think this is a very underestimated market, considering how important is music for most people. There are many things you could implement that would make the app much more exciting and social (see playlist followers; a homepage with the actual posts of people; etc), but instead, despite the claims of many of your users, you keep going in the opposite direction. How can people engage on social activities if they're practically invisible?

I wholeheartedly hope that you change your mind regarding this whole "social" thing. I really think you're underestimating your own market.

I thought sharing songs with friends was one of the most compelling features of Spotify. I never understood why it was hidden and so underdeveloped. Please Spotify. Give it a real chance. It's actually a super unique way of staying connected with people and other music services don't have a comparable feature. Why not give it a shot? I'm a UX/ UI designer at IBM. I'd be happy to get a couple other designers together and design it for you for free. Love, Sam

IM SO DISSAPOINTED IN YOUR DEVELOPMENT TEAM. OR MANAGEMENT. WHOEVER THOUGHT THIS WAS A GOOD IDEA IS SORELY MISTAKEN.

Just upgraded recently and regret it so much! All my songs in the inbox are now lost.... And i really liked sending songs this ways.

Giving mine and my friends vote for bringing it back!

I agree, there should have been some prior notice - especially to paying subscribers. Not that this feature should have ever been removed at all - for me personally it was essential, a dealbreaker. Rethinking whether I'll keep my subscription...

NoTime4Caution

I absolutely agree.

Sharing music with one another and taking it one step further -- discussing music with one another --is what makes the world go round. increasingly, we stay in touch with long lost friends because of the music we listened together, now that we are seas apart.

From a $_$ standpoint: Given that Spotify premium is not free ,one could argue that Soundcloud which still retains its messaging features may be a better buy at this point.

I also second all of the development ideas -- bring the inbox back and *improve* it. This feature can be extremely powerful and who knows one could start making Spotify music vines and sharing them with your friends. It is much more than just #NowPlaying on social media.

I am going to remove my premium account, this is not working for me without messaging

Inbox was one of the best things about Spotify, one of the reasons I'm a paying subscriber.  Please bring this back and make it even better

Totally agree! What is the point of being connected with others if you cant share your music? Huge UX fail. I understand the messaging feature wasn't fully developed, but it needs to be flushed out. Bring back the direct messaging and provide a proper notification.

Cheers!

Bring messenger back!!! It's the best form of social sharing - how relationships form and how love for new music grows!!!!!!!
