[Social] Bring back Inbox/Messaging with Notifications

The Inbox/Messaging feature did not get a real shot at even being a feature because Spotify took away notifications for new messages. Give Inbox/Messaging some development so users can continue to privately share songs.

Updated on 2025-08-27

Hi everyone,

We're excited to announce that this feature is making a return! 😎 The new revamped Messages lets users share content directly with friends inside the Spotify app and instantly start a conversation about it.

This post goes more in-depth on the topic, make sure to check it out!

Thanks for helping us make Spotify better 💚

My coworkers and I shared music with each other all the time it led us to be a cohesive team and fostered great relationships. We miss the functionality. Bring it back.

BRING IT BACK. I don't understand why Spotify is downgrading. Add features, don't take them away!

I'm a premium user and I don't understand why spotify keeps removing features, they are small sure but that's what differentiates this app from other apps.

Just now a friend asked me what my favorite playlist on spotify  was, and I was about to send it to him but now I can't, and I'm not about to go through facebook so everyother person can see this interaction with my friend. And the links usually don't work for some reason.

Whats the point of even having followers on spotify if you can't interact with them? Why are you doing this spotify? Saving money in the short term isn't helping your product on the long run, sooner or later a better product will appear and I WILL switch if it has more features.

I really miss the messaging feature where I could talk to my followers, send music recommendations to my mates, and just chat in general. Now more than ever it seems lots of apps are integrating messaging aspects to them as more and more people are looking to chat on multiple platforms and it is even a more and more common occurrence for people to have several conversations with the same person on different subjects using multiple apps at the same time. Talking and media consumption seems to be the use of smartphones in teens today, trumped only by sharing live pictures, so what do you think would work better than being able to listen to your latest soundtrack, whilst chatting to a mate, co-worker, or follower??!

THX...

I found about this feature being removed this morning. I had promised to a friend a would create a playlist for him and send it to him, but guess what? I couldn't! Please Spotify, bring the feature back. I've always been happy to pay for your premium service, but a few days ago I had to deal with you removing the "shuffle all" feature in a folder using Android, and now this inbox thing, I'm SO disappointed. I'm really close to cancelling this service.

Not really convincing me to pay for Spotify yet, Spotify. I'm a "Hey! You gotta hear this song I just found" kind of person, but I grew up doing that on a one-on-one basis. I've no desire to share my discovery with the world (i'm sure you'd like me to reach thousands of people with my influence, but that's just not me). I get it - the few people who are like me, who share with parties of one or two, are NOT the ones driving traffic to your service. Hard to want to support that kind thing, I know, but there are some of us who have been on the fence of subscribing and your removal of features that support the natural way people enjoy music with one another is sort of a weird way of convincing us to take the leap. Points of differentiation and all that. I can like and share with facebook and twitter and all of that on Pandora. I don't use Pandora, though. All of my (yes few) friends are on Spotify because we like "micro-sharing". I'm thinking that if my few friends and I were to switch to another service, and someone else and their few friends were to switch, and so on..... well, I'm not the savvy business person here, but I REALLY hope Spotify reconsiders the inclusion of the sharing feature. It was one of the "little things" that I've always liked, and miss terribly.

Are you kidding me? Seems to me that one of the most important characteristics of Spotify since its inception has been the ability to communicate and share music. That was supposed to be what it was all about. And now you've gone and abandoned it? This makes absolutely no sense. It was very important to me and a critical part of the whole experience. Bring it back - please!
