[Social] Bring back Inbox/Messaging with Notifications

The Inbox/Messaging feature did not get a real shot at even being a feature because Spotify took away notifications for new messages. Give Inbox/Messaging some development so users can continue to privately share songs.

Updated on 2025-08-27

Hi everyone,

We're excited to announce that this feature is making a return! 😎 The new revamped Messages lets users share content directly with friends inside the Spotify app and instantly start a conversation about it.

This post goes more in-depth on the topic, make sure to check it out!

Thanks for helping us make Spotify better 💚

I was thinking that, except listening to music and podcasts, we could also chat with other users, not artists, and recommend songs in the app or talk about come backs, live events or even concerts that our favourites artists might be planning to do.

You can message friends in the friends activity bar and it will open a chat blurb and will add the name of the song that was playing when messaged. For example, if they were listening to sunflower, you can just be like beautiful song, and the chat will say

Sunflower - Swae Lee

Beautiful song broo

And then they can reply and convo is sparked. Good way to enhance the friend activity bar. I know i am always taking a screenshot when i notice a friend is listening to something cool or i think is terrible and then texting them the screenshot and sparking convo from there. Having this in app would just motivate users to conversate and will also differentiate spotify from other music applications. Users will want spotify just to talk to friends about music.

As this grows, you can even share music and playlists through this maybe. Just an additional idea. Has a lot of applications for spotify and lots of promise.

Yes!! I would also love to be able to create Blend playlists with other users through the Spotify app, without having to send them a link on a completely different social media app

I think it would be very useful if Spotify implemented a feature where you can send songs directly to your friends on the Spotify app. Don't know if anyone has thought of this but it would be incredibly useful and I think Spotify should implement it. Like some kind of direct messaging service within the app instead of having to go to an external app. Thanks.

If this feature comes, Spotify's activity will increase. Bring this feature if possible because it gets harder to talk to friends from place to place. It would be nice to both listen to songs and text. And do not offer this feature only to the Americas, but to all continents, so that if it is in beta, more audience will come and people who know software will be more interested.

Sharing music is one of the most wholesome activities ever. Would be so nice to have a chat - DM shortcut to share music and playlists. Been thinking about this long enough 😄

**bleep** YEAH, finally someone said it, we need this. Even if u didn't want the app to be a social app, u can just add a feature where we can only send songs and reacted to them with a emoji, and can't send message. Just to share directly songs, album to our friends

At this point isn't better to just put a DM possibity on Spotify AND add what you said in the chat options? I think it would be very cool or am I wrong?
