[Social] Bring back Inbox/Messaging with Notifications

The Inbox/Messaging feature did not get a real shot at even being a feature because Spotify took away notifications for new messages. Give Inbox/Messaging some development so users can continue to privately share songs.

Updated on 2025-08-27

Hi everyone,

We're excited to announce that this feature is making a return! 😎 The new revamped Messages lets users share content directly with friends inside the Spotify app and instantly start a conversation about it.

This post goes more in-depth on the topic, make sure to check it out!

Thanks for helping us make Spotify better 💚

This was how I can share a great new music find with a friend.  I will never share it with all of my followers - music recommendations are targeted per person.  And we do not all connect Facebook.  It is very disappointing that Spotify removed this feature.

I was extremely sadden upon finding out this feature had been disabled, without any formal warning or heads up. I know this sounds cheesy, but basically the whole evolution of my past relationship (over 3 years) was documented through the Spotify inbox feature. Various moods and moments shared with another person were saved through this inbox feature. We even laughed last year together at the SXSW Spotify House, stating we were a true "Spotify Success Story."

I am more upset bc Spotify could have at least offered an option to export these songs into a playlist so we would have had a way to commemorate the deprecation of this feature. It's not the same to just send something in messenger or text. I loved the history of sharing songs with someone and often found myself perusing through these memories.

It was already a very basic feature (with several delays dependent on device); how much work could it really take to support this feature?

My request:

-Give us an option to export these songs into a playlist.

Thanks!

@amandaguz: You can still find the messages at https://play.spotify.com/messages - but yeah, it's strange to remove the message function. How hard can it be to fix it...

Spotify, please relaise that the ability to share playlists and message/receive notifications from other users was a major selling point for so many of us. Please reconsider and indeed put some extra development into this fantastic function. Thank you.

The most important function for Spotify has been removed in the latest update: the ability to share music through the Spotify app. Although it went from OK (you could share music and receive a notification) to Mediocre (you wouldn't even receive a notification anymore) removing the functionality is just plain arrogance. If the functionality isn't coming back I'll cancel my subscription, and move to a new platform (or back to one of the old platforms) for my music.

Instead of attributing the usage of the Inbox to bad UI-Design (It was already hard to find, not really convenient to use, and hard to add friends and the inbox overview wasn't really good either) removing notifications really killed it, and was just a step for facilitating the entire removal. Removing the notifications from the inbox meant you had to remind people by hand that you sent them some music. I can guess why the usage of the inbox drastically diminished when the notification was removed.

Social networks have been in decline for a while now, and adding some more unneeded steps to sharing an album through a different platform is inconvenient and unwanted. Requiring any kind of social network to share music with your friends is ridiculous.

Please reconsider, and bring the messaging functionality back.

Why on Earth has one of the key functions of Spotify been removed? As others have said, one of the main attractions for me in the first place was easy sharing of music. Posting to FB followers is not the same as sharing tracks between individuals: not to mention the fact that not everybody uses FB. I thought Spotify had taken that on board years ago but it seems not.

Spotify need to make the platform more networking friendly, not less. Removing notifications of new followers etc was another backward step.

And another thing; where's the 'give kudos' button gone on this board? Lots of Kudos to TheBat80 who rightly points out that if people weren't using the messaging function it was probably because they didn't realise it was there.
