[Web Player] Bring back the old Web Player

The minimalism of the web player makes it near unusable (self.spotify)

submitted 2 minutes ago by MovkeyB

Here is a list of basic stuff that got removed:

  • See the radio
  • See the queue
  • See the song length
  • see how far in the song you are

Here is stuff that got destroyed in terms of functionality.

  • adding a song to a playlist is now a lot more difficult and requires moving a lot more bc it opens up a HUGE window instead of the little menu

  • The volume slider is not live, its drag and drop so you can't hear the effect of the volume change in real time

Everything is HUGE and they just seem to love all the dead space and tell me pretty much nothing about whats going on.

It's atrocious. I've used it for about 10 minutes and I already despise it with a burning passion. These things I mentioned are just the ones that are just immediately obvious because I USE THEM FREQUENTLY

Hey folks,

We're just going through a few older ideas that we haven't updated.

Most of the functionality listed in the original post exists on the Web Player. The queue can be found in the bottom right corner near the Volume bar and you can find Radio by clicking the three dots next to any song, album or playlist.

If you have any new ideas you'd like to see on the webplayer, feel to submit them here.

Thanks!

Your analysis is poignant. Your optimism a treasure. Code change only seems
to go in one direction, towards the absurd. Not unlike the human race
tweaking itself towards extinction. Your attitude gives an old fart hope.
Thanks!

I've now been using open.spotify.com for a while and it's still no better. It really feels like 50% of the features are missing, and I can't install the desktop app.

The old Web player was never great, but it was serviceable. The new Web player is much worse, has been terrible from the beginning, and has barely improved in that time. Most of the problems, and all the worst of them, are bad design, not bugs in implementation. I put up with this only because the service is free, and I would never pay for Premium these days when, for the same price, I can use vastly superior software from almost any competing service.

What is that "vastly superior" competing software?

Personally, I don't know. If you look at prior posts, there have been other
streaming sources suggested.

I was a dedicated devotee of Spotify until the fiasco. But the moronic
change to an inferior product prompted me to just say "duck it" to all
streaming of music.

Analogous to my cutting the cord with cable many years ago and I don't
really miss either.

OK, but what do you use instead? Pandora? Deezer? Last.fm?

Or offline music players?

I started using spotify after the new web player was introduced, and I have many of the same problems.  NOTE: I am using free.  First off, there are SO many features missing.  I can't edit playlist info, the search bar is garbage, and adding songs to playlists is insanely painful.  Aditionally, the sidbar doesn't show my playlists, and I can't expand the album in bottom left, unlike in the desktop app.  I use the desktop app at home, and it is BEAUTIFUL, but at school I use a Chromebook, which doesn't support the app, forcing me to use the web player.  Also, I have had the issue repeatedly, where the web player skips in the middle of a song, and does this for EVERY.  OTHER. SONG.  I can't take it! And the play button'll randomly stop working, as well.  The web player is glitchy, inconvenient, and generally painful to use.  I wish Spotify would just make it like the desktop app.

I have discovered that this issue only happens when you remove a song from a playlist you are currently listening to. After removing the song, reload the page and everything should go back to normal.
