[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Updated on 2018-12-06

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

I got a respnse from @SpotifyCares in less than an hour after mentioning the "eat my ass like a cupcake" reference from @mistersandman  in a post mentioned to @Eldsjal - I did not mention @SpotifyCares so he either shared it with them or they are monitoring his mentions.

My message was: Bet @Eldsjal would get an #ExplicitButton if it was his daughter that heard "eat my ass like a cupcake" @ bday party bit.ly/spotifynsfw

(FYI - His Twitter page has a picture of a grinning 2/3 year old girl on a swing so I figure it's his daughter)

Their pathetic response was: we don't have any new info on this suggestion, but we'll remind our developers it's a popular request /A

To which I replied: @SpotifyCares @eldsjal if you have to remind devs that 6th most requested feature is popular you should fire 'em #SpotifyNSFK #whoisboss #BS

Feels helpless. Probably just gonna cancel and forget about it.

If they're not even going to acknowledge the request/need, and indeed have marked it as solved when it isn't, see you later.

THANK YOU Spotify for implementing this feature on at least some of your device clients this past week! I was all disappointed that I forgot to cancel before my Family Premium Subscription renewed and so i went into settings after an app update completed and all there is now _FINALLY_ an "Allow Explicit Content" toggle switch under playback settings! This setting isn't showing up on the Mac client yet, so please enable it in all of your clients. For other users reading this, the version of the Spotify app on android that has this feature enabled is Version 8.4.18.743 armV7. I confirmed this on another android auto head unit (Eonon 7150A) as well after updating the app and restarting. The feature seems to work great for radio/discovery, but not on existing suggested playlists from other users. It would be nice if we could still explore other suggested playlists without showing the explicit songs on the lists. Regardless, just wanted to say thanks. Now, just don't take it away or you'll REALLY frustrate your users 😉 I tried posting pics on a post and spotify deleted my entire post, so we'll see if this one sticks without them.

@FraggleD thanks for the update for the rest of us! As for how it works, that's what I would expect - at least based on how it works for Google Play Music. The explicit filter just removes explicit songs from the radio feature, but not from saved/shared playlists - which imo is just fine.

Here's some proof for Android users! 🙂

Interestingly enough, just checked my BlackBerry KEYone which is reporting version 8.4.18.743 armV7 and there is no explicit toggle... maybe it's a per account setting that's toggled on the server side by Spotify?

FraggleD

Perhaps, maybe they're doing some A-B testing or limited roll-out of the feature. I did notice that on my car unit the app updated and I still didn't see it, but then I restarted the device and/or logged out and back in and it displayed, so maybe something is being cached somewhere. The latest version on my iPad doesn't have it either yet (8.4.18.6xx).

Hmm, no sign of it for me (NZ). Right version, no setting 😞

This is an amazing idea! it would need to be avalible in the free version because ive run out of skips so many times when there is a explicit song up next.

I don't know if it matters for the setting in the app to display, but I currently have a premium family subscription.
