Language Categorisation and Search

Idea: Language Categorisation and Search

Spotify should assign every track a dedicated language tag based on the language of its lyrics. Songs without lyrics should be categorised as Instrumental. This metadata should be applied at the individual track level rather than the artist or album level, allowing multilingual artists to have songs accurately classified in each language.

Users should then be able to filter and search music by language, either through a dedicated search option or as an additional filter within existing search, playlists, recommendations, and radio stations.

This would make discovering music significantly easier for listeners who prefer to listen in a particular language. Currently, users often have to search for individual artists, browse country-specific charts, or rely on playlists that are only loosely associated with a language. These methods are inconsistent and frequently mix multiple languages together.

A language-based categorisation system would improve music discovery, increase exposure for artists creating music in less widely spoken languages, and provide a more intuitive way for multilingual users to find content that matches their preferences. It would also benefit language learners, expatriates, and anyone looking to explore music in a specific language without unnecessary friction.

In short, language should be treated as a core piece of searchable metadata, just like genre, release year, or explicit content.
