[Playlists] Public Playlist Folders

Hi!

I've seen this idea being thrown around before but often closed/inactive, so I thought I'd give it another go. (see here)

Capture.PNG

The folders feature has been around for quite some time now, and I love the idea of being able to organise my playlists as I do have more than 80 saved (lol).

However, having the folders public to followers would:

1. improve the look of user profiles' playlist tab

  • De-clutter the playlist tabs by being able to group/organise them

2. help followers find playlists better and easier

  • allows users to make more public playlists as it no longer gets lost in the public playlists tab
  • allows users to highlight their current/most popular playlists

This often gets turned down due to lack of likes/votes, so make sure you show so we can finally grab Spotify team's attention and make folders go public! 🙂

Thanks:D

I have so many playlists and folders allowed me to organize them so nicely! But it would be so much easier for other people to listen to my best ones if they could see my folders too 😞 Please make this happen!

I would like to share my usage of folders and why I believe displaying playlist folders on our public profile would benefit Spotify. I hope this reaches someone who can help communicate the idea behind approving this!

So, for me: I create many different playlists with many different intentions. For example, some playlists I create are based on genre, where only a specific genre is contained within it (ex: indies, oldies, rap, country, etc.). Other playlists I create are based on moods or feelings (such as happy, sad, bittersweet, motivational, etc.). Each of the mood-based playlists might contain a variety of genres, but they have a similar "vibe" that reflects the lyrics or melodies that are relevant to the particular emotion/mood that I am feeling or that I want to feel. In addition to those, there are also other playlists that I create with an intention of listening to during certain situations, with specific people, or a specific friend group (one that no one would enjoy other than that particular friend group), such as driving playlists, drinking/partying playlist, gym motivation, getting-ready playlists, playlists to fall asleep to, and so many others.

I categorize all of these playlist themes into folders with titles such as: Artists, Genres, Mood Swings, and Situations. It's really hard for people to find a playlist they're looking for since they are so widespread across my profile with the inability to view the corresponding folder to indicate its purpose.

If it is too complicated to have folders displayed on one's profile, another option could be to at least display the folder locations of each playlist above the playlist title on the user's main profile. It would be awesome for the specific, time consuming, and intentional purpose that we've put into our profile to at least be displayed to categorize the playlists in someway or another. Without my folders, I don't even know how I would navigate my music to try finding what I'm searching for. So, if I wouldn't be able to manage my profile without folders—even while being the exact person who created each one of my playlists—how would you expect others to?

Please take this into consideration! It would be greatly appreciated and would provide SO much help in allowing Spotify to become more functional.

Dear Spotify Team,

I have been SO eager to have Spotify allow the option of playlist folders being displayed on our public profiles.

So, I was looking at how decisions are made by the Spotify team when they've received an idea submission. The approval or denial of an idea  is based on: (1) Helping artists, (2) Data and other information we've collected, (3) Information from research testing, focus groups, and surveys, (4) Feedback in the Community and other support channels, and (5) Our overall short- and long-term business strategy.

To help the thought process behind the proposed idea, I thought I could share specifically how public playlist folders could reflect some of the above considerations.

  •        Helping artists: Some users listen to music at the bare minimum, which limits the amount of exposure they will have to new genres or artists. Public folders can help artists become more popular and spread across Spotify for individuals who don't really seek out or explore a large variety of musical artists. If a folder contains playlists that are based on specific moods, situations, or other unique customizations, an individual might dive into whatever sounds interesting to them—regardless of what genre or artist it is. Having unique and uncommon playlist titles is fun, but for users searching for music, they might not thoroughly understand the idea behind the playlist. A folder can help create a unified theme behind a group of playlists, which ultimately increases the chances of artists receiving listens, artists being discovered, becoming more well-known or known of in the first place, and also creates room for the sharing of diverse genres. Let's say a user searches for a playlist that is happy—but they hate the genre that is in that playlist. All songs and artists in that playlist will not be listened to by that user. However, a folder, containing playlists that are created to incorporate multiple artists, multiple genres, and multiple moods allows for listeners to experience the diversity in the Spotify experience and find new music that still resonates with them.
  •        Information from research testing, focus groups, and surveys: Displaying public playlist folders, whatever their name might be, can allow for Spotify to produce better recommendations to its users. It also can provide a more enhanced way for Spotify to understand how individuals choose to listen to music, and how their suggested music algorithm can be improved by the folders they've visited.
  •        Our overall short- and long-term business strategy: Folders can more thoroughly enhance the categorization of playlists. People want to be organized. One reason I, as well as many others, have chosen to use Spotify versus Apple Music or other music apps is because of the features that allow for organization. People want to have options that increase personalization, organization, and functionality. Spotify already uses a type of categorization on their main home page: featuring sections such as Recommended radio, Based on your recent listening, Chill, Uniquely yours, Popular albums, and many others. These sections contain playlists. This is what produces more diverse listening among Spotify users. Having public playlist folders could do the same—it would be similar to how users navigate the sections provided on the home page, but offer a more personalized and fun experience.

Overall, there are benefits to both Spotify and Spotify listeners.

Thanks!!

Any updates on being able to make folders viewable to other users?

shinobisensei

YES!!! We need this!!! I need to share a folder with over 2 dozen playlists contained (often within other sub-folders themselves).

rebl22

I’m back with more thoughts on this. Absolutely agree with previous comments, being able to add a photo to folders would be so nice and would match how genres are displayed under “search” in the current update. Your profile could look exactly like this, with folders visible in your custom order that displayed the title and an uploaded photo. Another option for the appearance of the folders for people who don’t want to upload a photo could also be to select a custom color for the regular folder icon to have so they could still color code their folders.

I dearly miss the social aspect that spotify had with messaging system, and while I know that the response to bringing that back was a firm “no”, this would be a simple way to make having your friends on spotify a little more interactive. shared listening status is fun but only available on desktop anyway, and all you can do with it is text them outside the app (if they are actually someone you know) to talk about the song/playlist they’re listening to. having public folders would at least make it so that when I do text someone about the fact that I see them listening to my playlist or an artist I love, I could direct them (or send them a link) to a whole folder of related playlists instead of cluttering up our texts sending them links to 5 different playlists that they’ll now have to sort through themselves, in which case the only way they can make it convenient to listen to them is if they add each one individually to their library and create their own folder to store them.

Has there been any update recently??? I want to do this thing were ppl can share playlists of their favourite artists but if I do it as a single playlist it will be wayyyy too long and messy. Having folders public would be such an eassyy fix for this.

baroudeur_abc

definitely a great idea
