I have an idea that I believe could help develop Spotify from being primarily an individual music experience into becoming a stronger social platform between friends.
I’ve always appreciated features like Spotify Wrapped and the new DM function. My idea follows the same direction:
On the homepage, there could be a format similar to “stories,” where users can share a favorite song once a week—maybe something they’ve recently discovered or a track that captures the feeling of their week. These weekly stories would be visible to one’s Spotify friends. You could like each other’s songs and write a short comment, which would then appear directly in the DM function.
I believe this would create a natural, light-hearted sense of community on Spotify. Music is often connected to mood, experiences, and life situations, and by seeing what friends share, it becomes easier to understand what they’re going through, what they’re listening to right now, or whether they’re traveling, in love, or simply found a new favorite track.
This type of social feature would not only build a natural sense of community on the platform but also contribute to increased screen time. When users return to see their friends’ weekly stories, listen to their shared songs, and respond to comments, it builds a habit that makes them open Spotify more often and use it for longer. At the same time, these shared songs encourage more active music discovery—users listen to more tracks than they otherwise would, which in turn generates more streams.
Additionally, an established stories format opens up future opportunities. If the feature becomes a natural part of user behavior, Spotify could eventually expand it with exclusive or enhanced features for premium users. This creates potential for new revenue streams without negatively affecting the existing user experience.
