Song Tagging

We need an option to attach tags to a song (electronic, chill, soulful, etc.), as well as an option to sort based on these tags to create dynamic playlists. This would essentially be a manual version of the dynamic playlist option that is already on the app. This would help those of us with many playlists to keep track of songs and not worry about forgetting old playlists.

Ayyy, let's go! I and other 1793 people agree! See the previous idea that was posted here https://community.spotify.com/t5/Live-Ideas/Music-Tag-Music/idc-p/5642174
Let's hope this time we get the same, or more, amount of support and get this implemented!

Playlists have long been a staple for organizing music on Spotify. However, they can become cumbersome when a single song needs to be a part of multiple playlists.

To address this limitation, the ability to tag songs can help offer a more efficient and flexible method of organizing music.

With the new tagging system, users can create custom tags and associate them with songs. Unlike playlists, a single song can have multiple tags, allowing users to categorize music based on various criteria.

For example, a user might tag a song as "Fast songs," "Gym songs," "Running songs," "Rock songs," and "Play in a Band songs" all at once, reflecting the song's different characteristics.

The real power of this feature lies in its ability to enable dynamic filtering. Users can now create a one-time-use unique playlist by selecting specific tags they want to hear.

For instance, if a user is in the mood for a high-energy workout, they can simply filter songs tagged as "Gym songs" and "Fast songs" to get the perfect playlist.

Furthermore, the tagging system can offer an additional functionality to auto-add songs with certain tags to specified playlists. This automation saves users time and effort, as they won't have to manually update playlists when adding new songs that fit certain criteria.

Introducing tagging as a complementary feature to playlists, rather than a replacement, enhances Spotify's organization capabilities. Users can still enjoy traditional playlists, but they now have the added flexibility and convenience of tagging.

From Spotify's perspective, this tagging system opens up new avenues for data collection. With more information on how users categorize songs, Spotify's recommendation system can become even more accurate and personalized, delivering an improved music discovery experience.

In summary, the ability to tag songs will help users to now efficiently categorize songs with custom tags and create dynamic playlists on the fly. This unique functionality sets Spotify apart from other music streaming platforms, offering users an enhanced and tailored listening experience.

I just arrived at Spotify about a month ago, and this is exactly what I've been looking for.

MusicBee player, a Windows app, does this perfeclty.

All Spotify has to do is implement what was already done there.

With a tagging system on place, it would be relatively easy to implement a dynamic playlists system.

On MusicBee almost all my playlists are dynamic (I have +200). It's almost impossible to manually manage hundreds of playlists.

I might be a little late to the party here but FYI, I've just created an app called TagATrack that let's you do exactly this! You can add "tags" to all of your Spotify songs and then search and filter based on those tags. You can check it out at https://tagatrack.com!

Unfortunately, we're still waiting for approval from Spotify for API usage, so it's not fully available for use yet. If you sign up for the mailing list, though, we'll let you know as soon as it's ready!

Hello everyone. I'll just start by saying that it completely blows my mind that this is not yet a feature. I have been using Spotify as a premium member for over 10 years now. I used to use iTunes for all music needs and spent hours if not days making sure my music was organized and sorted properly. When I shifted to Spotify, I lost that ability, but the access and ease obviously won over my need to organize. Though that was admittedly a hard pill to swallow at first.

The improvements Spotify has made over the past 10 years has been nothing but incredible, but that is why I am still so astonished that this feature does not exist.

The craziest part to me is that it would help the Spotify business goals exponentially to implement this. Yes, Spotify does a great job with their playlists being on-vibe or on-theme, but imagine the power of using all your customers tags to better create playlists and improve your learning models and algorithms?

Sure, some random users may tag some hardcore metal as "Kid Friendly" or "Acoustic Chill", but the majority of music lovers who use this feature will actually want to improve their experience. In the aggregate, the data collected would be incredible for both business insights and eventually user experience.

All in all, I am saying that this one is crucial. Let's get it built!

Have a great day folks!
