[Subscription] Student Discount in Quebec

Hi everyone,

I woke up this morning to Spotify's Student Discount email, which made me glad.., until I found out that it's not available in Quebec. As the voice of all Quebeckers, I would like to address Spotify's Team to make it available in Quebec too. We're a part of Canada as much as the rest of the provinces.

Thank you,

Hey folks,

We apologize for any confusion we have caused. Unfortunately, we’re unable to offer the student discount in Quebec at this time.

As soon as this changes we’ll post back here with an update.

Dear Spotify,
I completely agree, students in Quebec should have the right to the discount too. Please respond to our demands, there are thousands of students very unhappy with your policy.

Many thanks.

beyond your control?!?... Then who has control of Spotify if Spotify doesn't have control over it's decisions?!?

I believe that rumor is that it is the regulations within Quebec which
prevent this promotion. Spotify had the choice of changing the way the plan
works across Canada OR just block it in Quebec.

Simply put, Quebec protects the client heavily. Spotify cannot modify its
policies because of one province. Quebec wants to be avant-garde so this
kind of thing can happen.

It has nothing to do with language laws. I cannot say what I believe the
problem is or this comment might be blocked, but blame it on the Quebec
gov, not on Spotify.
I hear you and agree that Quebec has more consumer protective policies, but so does California.... I know they're 40 Million strong and all that entails. But Quebec is Canada's second largest market at 8.25 Million, so very surprised Spotify wouldn't provide some sort of work around similar to Netflix and others. Even Google provides a promo option to residents of Quebec. Just trying to give the flip side if you know what I mean. Cheers!

"Outside of your control?" What kind of excuse is that? You're the ones creating the discount, you can definitely apply it to whomever you want. Many companies have "Student discounts" that work all across the country. So what's the real reason?

From what I've read, it seems to be because there's a law in Quebec that make it illegal to switch automatically from 2 very different pricing without user input. Meaning that they can't start charging 10$ automatically when it had been 0.99$ for three months. From what I've seen, there are many easy ways to go around this law.

Also, there's been a class action lawsuit resolved as of January 31st in Quebec, which seems to give most people entitled to it a free month(or 3? Maybe I didn't get this right...).

Feel free to google what I've said and correct me if necessary, I can't find remember where I got the info about the law.

This comment will be half in French because it's WAY easier for me (I'm not from here and I come from a country when we speak cheese) - sorry anglophone friends. I know it's probably not allowed but I will translate eventually I promise. I also have not had the time to read all the thread - sorry about that. Also if I may suggest, a link toward the francophone community would be appreciated, as I like my accents and fancy letters.

TLDR: I read the legal stuff.

Donc LONG STORY SHORT : blame Rogers, Bell and PKP (videotron), not Spotify.

Donc Spotify se couvre en enlevant la discount etudiante, ca fait c. parce que pour certains d'entre nous 10 piasses par mois c'est beaucoup. Personellement je rentabilise en ecoutant la musique h24. Listening to more music is cool.

Je tiens aussi a dire a la personne qui fait les playlist en quebecquois qu'elles sont geniales pour les immigrants.

Spoiler
I also would like to mention that Qc team is awesome. The playlists are great.

Cheers to all of you.

It's been a year, and still no change? Really? So great for a company that keeps receving my 10 bucks every month. Changing when you have all your playlists on Spotify is ****. Still, doing it next month.

What I don't understand and disappointed me about Spotify is that they don't explain to us exactly why they can't offer the student plan to Quebec residents. So we can't really understand why. They say : "due to circumstances outside our control [...]". What are these circumstances? Even when we know that Apple Music is offering a student plan at 4,99$ to Quebec residents... too! And with a 3-month trial! (in the date of February 2018) So I have difficulties to understand that's a legal thing. It's sad because I really like Spotify and would love to stay with it for multiple reasons. But I went to Apple music, because it's worth seeing, using and the price I can pay as a student is offered to me as a Quebec residents. Maybe Spotify will explain to us why, one day.  😕
