Android app unresponsive on a particular WiFi network

We've received reports from Android users (mainly Samsung and Google Pixel) experiencing issues where the Spotify app becomes unresponsive, freezes, or crashes when connected to certain WiFi networks. The issue doesn't occur while using mobile data.

Hey folks,

We're happy to announce that this should now be fixed for everyone - just make sure you're running the latest version of Spotify available.

If you're still having trouble, it's worth logging out and signing back in to your account to force a resync or performing a clean reinstall of the app to get rid of any potentially corrupted cache.

Should you need assistance with anything else, you can post a new thread in the relevant help board here.

Thanks !

Recently my Spotify app has become unusable while connected to my home wifi.  It opens but just freezes and then crashes.  Disconnect from wifi and use mobile data... It comes back to life.  I have no issues with my wifi and it's only recently started happening.  Any clues?

My Question or Issue

Hey @ChrisM55, welcome to the Spotify Community! 🎵

This is quite strange. Do you have any VPN/DNS/AdBlocker service active? If so, disable them and see if that makes any difference. You can also try on different platforms like Spotify for desktop or the web player to confirm if the issue is solely on your mobile app.

At last, if nothing else works try a clean-install of the Spotify app using this guide. This tends to fix most such issues easily.

Let me know how it goes. 🙂

Thanks Amay.

No VPN or anything like that.  Other users in the house are having no issues with their app on different Pixel phones.  I've reinstalled as per those instructions but still no luck... As soon as I login the app just freezes and I get the "not responding" notification to close the app.  Disconnect from wifi though and all is fine when I reopen.

My wife and I both have pixel 9 phones. Exact same problem. We can't use Spotify at home with Wi-Fi on. Turn off Wi-Fi and use cellular when you start the app and everything's fine

Thanks for the replies @ChrisM55 @Jodyp. Here are a few more things you can try:

  1. Try a different WiFi connection if possible, or restart your router and see if that resolves the issue.
  2. Exclude Spotify from any battery optimisation or cache cleaner app, and make sure background usage is enabled.
  3. Reset the mobile device's network settings to default.

Keep me posted.

Hi - having the same problem here. Spotify is unusable in this state, especially because I need wifi to connect to speakers in my house. It is the only app crashing. Everything else is working fine.

Amay's tips haven't worked for me.

My Question or Issue

When launching the Spotify Android app on my android phone or my android tablet, I'm unable to interact with the UI, it is unresponsive, eventually it'll respond but is very slow and I keep getting a 'Spotify isn't responding' notification pop up. This started happening after I updated to the latest version Android version on my Sasmung mobile devices, but it only affects the Spotify app, the version is 9.0.84.1340. I'm not sure if it's specifc to Samsung One UI 8 or other Android 16 devices?
I've tried clearing and uninstalling the spotify app on both devices and reinstalling, but the same issue still occurs on launching the freshly installed app and logging in.
Any help with this would be appreciated.

Hey there @tundeolok

Thanks for getting in touch about this and welcome to the Community!

You mentioned that you've already reinstalled the app, but would you mind going through the steps of a clean reinstall, as it's more thorough than a normal one?

If the issue persists, would you mind giving a different internet connection a go to see if the same happens? If you've been using Wi-Fi, now you can try with mobile data.

If there's no difference, could you ask a friend or a relative to log in to their account on your affected devices to check if they can replicate this behavior with their own account?

We'll be waiting for your reply.

Thanks for the reply.

Clean reinstalling didn't seem to help, but when I changed to a different internet connection that worked, not sure why my WiFi network is only causing isses for the Spotify app, and only seemed to start after i updated the OS on my devices, It doesn't seem to have affected Spotify on other people's devices that have connected to my WiFi.

I'll try and see if there's anything specific to mine.

Thanks for the help.
