Android app unresponsive on a particular WiFi network

We've received reports from Android users (mainly Samsung and Google Pixel) experiencing issues where the Spotify app becomes unresponsive, freezes, or crashes when connected to certain WiFi networks. The issue doesn't occur while using mobile data.

Hey folks,

We're happy to announce that this should now be fixed for everyone - just make sure you're running the latest version of Spotify available.

If you're still having trouble, it's worth logging out and signing back in to your account to force a resync or performing a clean reinstall of the app to get rid of any potentially corrupted cache.

Should you need assistance with anything else, you can post a new thread in the relevant help board here.

Thanks !

My Question or Issue

I recently updated my Galaxy S24 to Android 16 (from 15) and to One UI 8 (from 7 or 7.x).

Now when I launch Spotify (9.0.88.1405) and take an action, e.g., tap the "currently playing" section at the bottom, there is a 2-5 second delay - this happens with every action I try to take.

My Wi-Fi net work is a TP Link Deco and all other apps are fine. The first thing that comes to mind is that the issue is related to a device that I have several casting-ready devices that Spotify is looking to communicate with, including:

  • 5 x Google Home Mini
  • 4 x Google Nest Mini (2nd gen)
  • 1 x Google Nest Hub Max
  • 1 x Sonos Beam

If I disconnect from my Wi-Fi, the Spotify app works as expected/as it did before the update to Android 16.

If the support team wants to see it in action, I recorded a Loom (DM me).

I have a similar issue on my roommate's phone. Galaxy S42+ (SM-S926U). Hopefully it's something that get fixed soon! When I try to connect it to any of my Google Home devices, the app responds very slowly. (2-5 second delay per tap). The second I turn the phone's wifi off, Spotify works great. I force closed the app, reset the cache, I logged out/back in, and uninstalled/reinstalled the app. No changes. If I wait long enough, I receive the error:"Spotify isn't responding.".

- The phone is connected to my Asus mesh system. I tried the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands and found no difference in performance

- We have a pixel 8 running Android 16, Spotify version 9.0.88.1405. no issues at all connecting to gogle home devices. performs normally.

- I don't have issues using other media apps on any wifi band at home on the galaxy device

- Wifi and Google Home devices are working and connecting normally.

- Android version 16, One UI version 8.0

- Spotify version 9.0.88.1405

It happened to me once I upgraded to One UI 8 on my Galaxy, on One UI 7 it worked fine, since I upgraded the app is unresponsive when I am connected to my WIFI network, however if I turn off the WIFI on my phone and restart the app it works great.

My WIFI network has Google Speakers, usually Spotify detects the speakers and allow me to play music (using the broadcast button).

So I guess something in Samsung One UI 8 + Wifi with smart speakers is triggering this issue.

I tested today another older router on my network and spotify worked well. But all my devises , speakers etc are on my main WiFi. That WiFi is a TP-Link Deco Xe75 Mesh Network So 2,4GHz , 5 GHz and 6 GHz. Encryption Set at  2.4GHz & 5GHz = WPA2/WPA3 and 6GHz on WPA3.

I Have tried turning off 6GHz No Go. I have set the Encryption to WPA / WPA2 like my older router Still No Go.

My Phone is a Pixel 6 Pro.

Same here, its almost Impossible to use.

I am running the APP in a Xiaomi 14 Ultra.

I am having this issue - specifically with podcasts. I can listen to all of my music on this network, but I am unable to listen to a single podcast 😞 I have tried reinstalling, logging in with an alternate account, etc.

@Yordan Thanks for the update that the issue is under investigation!

BTW, you may want to let whomever manages Google Play Store review responses know that the issue is under investigation (and not resolved by a reinstall) and have them direct people to this Community forum.

Similar issue. "Spotify is not responding" however, it seems to only happen when I attempt to cast to other Google Devices.

Just wished to add my two penn'orth to this thread. Samsung A36, Android 16 with Samsung One UI 8, also an Asus Mesh WiFi. App moves like it's made of treacle for about 2-3 weeks with casting to Google Chromecast devices really painfully slow with up to 1 to 2 minutes connection wait time before connecting if it's a group of speakers. Did all the usual suspects of trying to fix this and thought it was possibly due to downloading Lossless tracks as it seemed to coincide with this development, or the ever increasing amount of audio listening options it now puts in front of you.
