Issue with storage option switching from SD Card to internal

My Question or Issue

This happened with my last phone, Samsung S7 running Oreo (or whatever the most recent OS is) but it was fixed when I got the Moto X4. I like to keep a lot of songs downloaded offline because my service is terrible and I also spend a lot of time in the mountains. Before I I update my phone to the new Android Pie OS there was no problems. Now everytime I reset my phone I think spotify cannot see my SD card at first and tries to download all the music to its internal storage and I have to go back in and tell it to store it in the SD card. That is extremely annyoing but not the end of the world. What is really frustrating is that I think all of the downloaded songs are still on the SD card and just keep redownloading and taking up space. Eventually this will cause me to reformat the card which will be a major pain for me since I store a large amount of photos on there also. Is anyone else have this problem? I have already uninstalled and reinstalled the application so any other suggestions or help?

Hey @Kloberdanz,

Thanks for the reply.

This issue is linked to the specific device and can be resolved with some troubleshooting. In order for us to find the right steps for your device setup, we'd need the device setup details like brand/model and operating system. Sharing the troubleshooting you've already tried will be helpful aswell.

The basic steps to try are to remove the SD card, format it, reinstall Spotify without the SD card in your phone and then insert the SD card. Here are the steps for a clean reinstall.

Most of the Android devices have some form of preinstalled cache/battery/memory optimizing apps. Making sure, that Spotify is set as an exception there would also probably make a difference. This site describes the steps for that on the most common devices.

Keep us posted and let us know how that wend,

Cheers!

This happened to me FOUR TIMES in the last TWO days, ALWAYS after restarting my phone. I'm tired of waiting hours to download my 2000 songs only to do it again after the next time I restart my phone. The support has been nothing but utterly useless regarding this problem and seeing how many people are affected by this problem for a VERY long time, I'm starting to question myself if Spotify is worth the troubles.

This isn't device or SD related. Clearly happening across multiple devices (LG G7 here), the problem is Spotify is booting and not Waiting for SD cards to load up, so it defaults to internal. This happens on restarts, updates, battery died, etc. The Spotify boot sequence is just improperly designed.

A simple temporary solution would to be to toss an identification file in each storage location (text file for the simplest example), and keep a copy of the selected storage's identification tag in the Spotify directory. On boot, wait to find that storage for 60s. If that fails, pop up to the user 'Storage not found, would you like to download to a new location, or pause all downloads?'. Of course there are more elegant solutions, but this should be a quick fix if you're strapped for ideas.

We're not asking to be able to store different songs in different locations, we just want a basic feature that we're paying for with Spotify Premium. Enough is enough Spotify, get up and do the job we're paying you to do.

Same issue on my XPERIA 5 III...

Three years and this problem is still happening to premium customers.  Same with the glitch that happens if spotify is set to offline when the app or phone updates and restarts, where you cannot log in unless you uninstall the app.  This service is $10 a month. I still have to manually fast forward through ads on podcasts when I pay for premium.  Come on guys!

Galaxy TAB S8 here, same problem - Congratulations Spotify for not being able to fix this bug since 2014. Worst support I've seen so far.

It is September 2022 and the problem still exists. My phone isn't a Samsung and I've tried multiple SD cards, done many reinstalls and all the other BS support tells me to do.

I've discovered that Tidal has a lot of the music I like so I'm ditching Shitify. They have no respect for Android users.

WOW! That post you referenced as recently reported was from 2019 and in a Not Right Now status.... What does that even mean? This has been a known issue for over 3 years? Why is this not a priority "right now"? This is ridiculously bad support.
