Issue with storage option switching from SD Card to internal

My Question or Issue

This happened with my last phone, Samsung S7 running Oreo (or whatever the most recent OS is) but it was fixed when I got the Moto X4. I like to keep a lot of songs downloaded offline because my service is terrible and I also spend a lot of time in the mountains. Before I I update my phone to the new Android Pie OS there was no problems. Now everytime I reset my phone I think spotify cannot see my SD card at first and tries to download all the music to its internal storage and I have to go back in and tell it to store it in the SD card. That is extremely annyoing but not the end of the world. What is really frustrating is that I think all of the downloaded songs are still on the SD card and just keep redownloading and taking up space. Eventually this will cause me to reformat the card which will be a major pain for me since I store a large amount of photos on there also. Is anyone else have this problem? I have already uninstalled and reinstalled the application so any other suggestions or help?

Hey there.

We just wanted to let you know that we've looked into this with the right folks now.

We are currently trying to resolve the issue. We don't have a timeframe for a fix, but we're really glad you let us know about this. If you have any other questions, just let us know!

Keep your app up-to-date and have a nice day 🙂

Same issue here with a Samsung Galaxy A71 / Android 13. After a device restart, download location is switched to internal storage and the downloading begins...

The workaround I found is to move the entire installation of Spotify to the SD card, but you have to do it each time Spotify app updates. What it should be fixed is Spotify to remember to install the app on the SD card when updating.

1.1.23 happened.

Again needed to redownload over 2760+ songs on my list. Spotify goes to internal memory.

Big problem to change location back to external from settings. Tells your SD card might be defective.

Had life time warranty on Kingston 128 Gb card and their customer services suggested to look at this thread.

It was not a failure in the card, but rather on Spotify and happens on random reboots of phone.

Can it be fixed?

It should be easy to implement (program) this.

Just add a settings file in the SD card into Spotify's folder, then when the SD card is re-mounted with a diferent path, scan all SD cards and if the settings files is found, you can know that is the one that should be used. From then on, use the SD card as usual.

The storage location keeps switching from SD card to Device storage.  This issue has happened since at least summer 2021 almost daily.

By now it is February 2023. I just got another phone (Samsung Galaxy A52 Enterprise Edition 4G) and I can confirm all downloads are moved back to internal memory after every reboot of the phone.
And no, I know support needs to ask these questions because of the script, there is nothing wrong with the SD card.

This is sooooo annoying and makes the option of placing downloads on the SD card completely useless for phones with less internal memory (unless you only have 10 favorite songs :-))

This should be fixed, it should not be necessary to put the app itself on the SD card, because apps are always moved back after an update. We need a permanent solution.

Good afternoon. I just bought a new phone and re-installed Spotify onto Android 11. After just a few uses of my Premium subscription, I became very disappointed to discover that all of the settings and downloaded media had reverted back to the phone's internal memory after having spent a lot of time downloading the media to my SD card.

I noticed this after I discovered that the app was automatically re-downloading over 350 songs all over again, which there was no reason for it to do. After pressing "Remove all downloads" to put a stop to the download process, that is when I noticed the reversion and also noticed some of my other settings were out of whack.

Now even more disappointing was that I noticed this has been an issue for some time with no real fix!

However, are you not able to modify your app so that a timed delay occurs when the app starts up in the background after starting/restarting the phone itself? On most Windows-based PC's, the system BIOS allows users to add a custom delay time in order to give some older hard drives to start up and initialize before the BIOS loads the operating system. This ensures the drive is always fully ready for when the OS is loaded and so no errors occur.

Why not do the same thing to the Spotify app in order to give the phone some time to initialize the SD card? Also, each user should be able to choose any 1 of 4 delay times: 15 seconds, 30 seconds, 45 seconds or 1 minute. And if the user attempts to start Spotify early on within the delay time, a message should appear telling the user to "Please wait for the SD card to initialize...".

On my smartphone, I noticed that it could take around 15-30 seconds for my SD card to initialize fully after I enter the PIN to log in.

Furthermore, why not arrange it so that all basic configuration data is ALWAYS fixed on the phone's internal memory and that only downloaded media can be saved to the SD card if the listener so chooses?

It seems rather silly that no one on the development team has ever thought of these types of fixes!

Collin

My Question or Issue

On every reboot Spotify resets the location of the stored media. I know that this is an ongoing issue. However the extra issue is that, when you've waited for your SD card to mount before opening Spotify ( sometimes I wait even 2min). Spotify logs out and when you log back in again it resets your storage location.
Then if you finally bypassed the device from restarting your music download progress (by turning it to offline mode asap), and after you've waited for the device to transfer to the SD card. The app ignores the music that's already been downloaded and that's on the SD card, so it starts downloading all the songs from the start again. My one playlist is 2600 songs and to download this every day (sometimes twice because my walkman turns off after 4hours of inactivity)

I'm using a Walkman A 300 series.
I change the save directory SD card to download some music.
when I finish download the music and restart my Walkman, it will Change the directory to Walkman main storage.

I have encountered exactly the same problem, I have an xperia phone, I inserted a TF card into the phone, and then changed the storage location to TF card in the spotify setting interface.

Just now, my phone restarted by itself (an old problem with Sony phones), and then I found that spotify was downloading music, which caught my attention, and this stupid app downloaded the cached music again, on my phone Internal storage! ! I really don't want to have to re-download the music every time I reboot...
