Playback issues: Songs going silent on Android app

We've received reports from Android users that the progress bar of a song keeps moving but there's no sound coming out. When the app is restarted, the progress bar goes back to the point where the song went silent.

 

Some users noticed that the issue doesn't occur when the features below are toggled off:

  • Gapless playback - found in Settings > Playback
  • Equalizer - found in Settings > Audio Quality

In case you're experiencing this issue, make sure to give it a like and provide the following info (if you haven't already):

  • Does the app switch to the next song or is it stuck on the current one (with the timer still counting)?
  • The day, time and time zone this has occurred on
  • Your device's OS version
  • The version of Spotify you're running
  • Whether this occurs when playing from the mobile device directly or when connected to another device (Bluetooth, headphones, etc.)
  • The troubleshooting steps you've tried so far
  • A video showing how things look from your end when this issue happens

Thanks! We'll pass the info on to our tech folks so they can look further into this. In the meantime, you can try the workaround of disabling Gapless playback and the Equalizer in the app's settings to see if that does the trick for you.

"Gapless playback" is now disabled, but still happening. Equalizer is off anyway.

 

Also seems to be connected to locking/unlocking the phone.

  • Audio output stops on reaching new track. Unpredictable but usually occurs more than once on a continuous album play.
  • Occurs on direct playback and through bluetooth: no difference noted.
  • Time advances to the end of the track. In limited tests, it gets stuck at the end and does not advance to next.
  • Audio is reliably restored by skip back or forward, or seek within the track.
  • Has been occurring for more than 6 months, so across multiple OS updates and Spotify updates, but currently:
  • Currently on Spotify 8.9.62.566
  • Currently on Android 13 build 61.2.A.0.472A release-keys
For some reason I can’t play on Spotify. The progress bar moves but no sound at all. Restarted the app, the phone and updated the app but nothing happens.

Mostly it happens when it goes to the next song.

Happens both through speakers on the phone and 2 types of headphones connected by Bluetooth (not connected at the same time) 

I tried reinstalling the app, didnt help. Tried "forgetting and reconecting" my headphones, didnt help 

Tried restarting the phone, didnt help. 

 

Whats weird is that if i press "skip" to the next or previous song it will restart playing as normal for a while

Dalej nic się nie dzieje w sprawie naprawy problemu pisałem już o tym w styczniu i pół roku dalej nic.Podpowiedzieli też gdzie szukać problemu i dalej nic!!!

This is why I cancelled Premium. Because you can't just let Podcasts play consecutively without it going silent and the app thinks it's still playing. I've gone through 2 phone companies, 3 phones, searched all settings. Nothing helps. I believe it's in the coding of the app.

Fully updated (always)

Tried gapless playback toggle 

  • If there was any other options for music apps with this amount of content I would have switched already. It seems they have a monopoly

Interment issue here, maybe once a month,  the progress bar continues but sound does not.

Helpfull if someone on the other side is actually interested in finding a cure.

 

My similar symptoms occur when switching from one device (windows laptop) feeding to my Onkyo "bluetooth" receiver almost every time.  My cure has been to Off-On the receiver, works 90%  of the time. When  the Onkyo restarts it finds the BT and starts at the disconnect point. Occasionally I have to manually reconnect the BT/PC connection. Apparently the switch disrupts the connection. It occurs at similar times moving from one playlist to another. Same Microsoft cure, Restart.

 

Annoying when looking for different music

In my case, the equalizer enabled in the application is to blame. It's gotten even worse lately. I described the problem in more detail here.
