Playback issues: Songs going silent on Android app

We've received reports from Android users that the progress bar of a song keeps moving but there's no sound coming out. When the app is restarted, the progress bar goes back to the point where the song went silent.

Some users noticed that the issue doesn't occur when the features below are toggled off:

  • Gapless playback - found in Settings > Playback
  • Equalizer - found in Settings > Audio Quality

Hey everyone,

In case you're experiencing this issue, make sure to give it a like and provide the following info (if you haven't already):

  • Does the app switch to the next song or is it stuck on the current one (with the timer still counting)?
  • The day, time and time zone this has occurred on
  • Your device's OS version
  • The version of Spotify you're running
  • Whether this occurs when playing from the mobile device directly or when connected to another device (Bluetooth, headphones, etc.)
  • The troubleshooting steps you've tried so far
  • A video showing how things look from your end when this issue happens

Thanks! We'll pass the info on to our tech folks so they can look further into this. In the meantime, you can try the workaround of disabling Gapless playback and the Equalizer in the app's settings to see if that does the trick for you.

As always, rest assured we'll keep you posted here as soon as we have any new information to share, so Subscribe to the thread to stay tuned!

I've had the same issue since July on two separate devices.

It was rare at first but has been increasing in occurrences with each update.

Don't use gapless playback

Spotify 8.9.94.470, Android 14, xiaomi 14

nothing changed despite the claims. Still silence on track change/manual seek.

Turning off app features is a workaround at best, not nearly a solution. I don't want to be left with a flat sound without the equalizer, let alone gapless playback that is crucial for listening albums that is my main scenario. It should be fixed as other apps work well without any workarounds.

I've stopped listening to albums on Spotify on Android, as the problem became awful (literally every other track could sometimes be "silent"). Playlists is sometimes occurs on, but I've found that "Radios" don't tend to have to issue so I've simply been using those and podcasts for the last 4 months.

I did try listening to an album earlier this week, and the 2nd, 4th, and 5th songs were silent unless I seeked to the start of the song. If I leave the song player, it just doesn't start the next track, and would show 03:50/03:50 played (at least it doesn't show more stupid things like being 10 minutes into a 2 minute song like it used to, but still that's not a fix to the real problem).

Working better on my app.

At the moment I see no improvement, sadly.

Status Update

I've been following this issue since correcting my disconnect issue with a windows PC .

It's very helpful to see Spot and the community sharing their findings with a common issue.

It very easy to think nothing is being done to correct problems and complaints.

Spot, sharing the actual findings and reasons for difficulties in corrections informs us users that someone is actually paying attention to complaints from us. Otherwise It's very hard to understand  why nothing appears to be being done to mitigate issues without communication.

I read input from users threatening to close their account over silly things that seam to be a simple fix "bring back the hart" "dump/hide the DJ" etc. Some are petty gripes others are genuine serious distractions to comfortable use of the service (DJ).

As per my previous post, further updates, playing with suggested settings and toggling things on/off has not helped after admin say changes have been made with the issue.

I've also gotten a new car with android auto capability and it mutes on auto and with Bluetooth through the media player. Pausing and playing again fixes it for the remainder of that song. It happens with downloaded music as well. Phone is updated fully, as is Spotify.

Unfortunately whatever updates Spotify has made have not yet improved the situation on my devices 😞

  • Does the app switch to the next song or is it stuck on the current one (with the timer still counting)?
    • Gets stuck on the current song but doesn't seem to end/pause.
  • The day, time and time zone this has occurred on
    • This happens constantly, but see video for an example at 12:05 PM PST - Nov 28, 2024.
  • Your device's OS version
    • Android 15 (Pixel 9 Pro) [ap3a.241105.008]
  • The version of Spotify you're running
    • 8.9.96.476
  • Whether this occurs when playing from the mobile device directly or when connected to another device (Bluetooth, headphones, etc.)
    • Built-in speakers
  • The troubleshooting steps you've tried so far
    • -Disabling gapless playback (equalizer already disabled).
    • -Restarting phone.
    • -Allowing Spotify unrestricted battery access.
  • A video showing how things look from your end when this issue happens

This is affecting me constantly since upgrading from my S22 to Pixel 9 Pro. Hope there's a fix.

Crazy how there are tons of ppl with this problem for almost a year and still no fix, wow Spotify, just wow.

Idk if it's also the case with most people, and if someone pointed it out already, but, at least for me, this problem gets worse when I lock my phone. It stops in 10 seconds or so, almost like clockwork..
