Smart Shuffle keeps turning itself on

Hey folks!

Some of you have reported that Smart Shuffle is automatically turning itself on again after being switched off. This is now being looked into.

Note: The Smart Shuffle feature works on a playlist-by-playlist basis. If you turn it off on one playlist, it doesn't mean that it is turned off for all playlists.

We'll keep you posted 🙂

Hey folks,

Just a heads-up that you can now toggle whether Smart Shuffle is available on your mobile apps from the app settings!

  1. Tap your profile picture at the top.
  2. Tap Settings and privacy.
  3. Select Playback.
  4. Switch Enable all play modes off and you're good to go!

Stay tuned for updates in regard to the other platforms 🙂

Quite annoying. I’ll use Apple Music till this is resolved.  We should get refunds for premium and not having premium features.  Ridiculous.

Agreed, sadly, no refunds will be given. Spotify said to me,
"We are afraid to inform you that we won't be able to compensate Premium. Rest assured, our specialist team is working on the issue, don't worry soon we will fix it."

By the way, that was August 5th, 2024. Obviously, the issue still isn't fixed.

ZombieZig

Its been going on longer than 2024. Tired of false promises, ditching them even if they do fix it.

@Everyone Start review bombing there app reviews.

flyguyee

I already left them a 1-star review on the Google Play Store. I agree with you!

Hitting the same annoying issue with the following setup:

  • Device: iPhone/iPad, iOS 17.5.1
  • Spotify App: 8.9.64.456
  • Geo: US (West)
  • Symptoms:
    • When using Connect with Sonos speakers, the shuffle function kicks in and even plays songs that are not in the list displayed (Release Radar as a good example)
    • Problem does not appear when playing on the device directly (or in the car through bluetooth)
  • Workaround:
    • Send music through bluetooth or AirPlay to the Sonos speakers (not desirable, but workable temporarily)
  • How to reproduce:
    • Just turn Spotify Connect on with a Sonos speaker and the issue occurs, very predictable as far as I can tell.

Happy to share a screencast I made on iPad, but it's very easy to reproduce.

Thanks!

I get this issue on both windows' desktop Spotify player and on Android. My Liked Songs playlist suddenly started defaulting to "smart shuffle" and doesn't seem to turn off even when I re-start the app or change devices. Sometimes it's not even removing "smart shuffle" recommendations when turning off, and I don't realize until I hear a song I've never heard before. I've attached a screenshot of it happening live just now.

Been experiencing the same thing! I have to open the Spotify app (desktop) every 5 seconds just to check that it hasn't turned on smart shuffle again despite me turning it off. Please fix this issue as it's really annoying, inconvenient, and makes me want to turn to a different music player. 🙂

(Note: I use Spotify Premium.)

Your device + its OS version; macOS 13.6.7 (22G720)

Your Spotify app version; Spotify for macOS (Apple Silicon) 1.2.44.405.g81fd6352

A screen recording of the issue;
Does this happen across devices or on a single device? Only using macOS version at the moment.
Does this happen when using the Connect feature or when playing normally? Only testen when playing normally (via bluethooth speaker)
What are the steps to reproduce the issue on your end?

Smart shuffle turns back on when:

  • Inside the app you open any other view than the playlist you're playing; e.g. click on another playlist, artist, open settings, ...
  • Inside the app, when you pauze a playlist and start playing again
  • When the app gets minimized to tray (on desktop)
  • When the app goes “to the background”, e.g. switching desktops or switching to an fullscreen app
  • Basically, it turns on whatever you do, other than open Spotify, hit play and don't interact with your computer anymore

I am having a weird issue with Spotify recently

Samsung Galaxy S23, Spotify keeps running in background while I am listening to music on my computer, then it turns the smart shuffle on and when I put it off on my computer it goes on again after a while.

What the **bleep** is going on with smart shuffle? I am forced to listening to music I don't like and it's very annoying I have 80k+ minutes of listening a year and it becomes a serious problem.

Overall it looks like Spotify is doing weird with shuffle and playlist based on a track, instead of being objectively making a playlist from the said music it creates a playlist... With music I already know and that aren't really linked together by the genre.

This is a serious concern, I am feeling « Algorithmed » by Spotify, like shuffle and playlist creations are just based on what I listened recently, this is commercial restrictions when we want to go out and discover something new, we don't pay for that.

Can you explain how to lock Smart shuffle down and redo the true shuffle?
