Spotify keeps playing hidden songs

Since there is no option to delete a song from an album, I hide them and actually I missed that feature from apple music. So there is a lot of hidden songs in my album catalogue and now they just suddenly start to play. Updates and new device didn’t work. If even I hidden and unhide them again, next day same story. How can I fix that help?

Hi folks,

This should now be fixed for everyone running the following versions and above:

  • 📱 Mobile - 9.0.44
  • 🖥 Desktop - 1.2.64

In addition, we're excited to announce that hiding songs is now available in playlists and albums on desktop too, and the feature will now sync across all your devices!

⚠️ Note: Hiding a song makes it unplayable only in that specific playlist/album. This means that you'll still be able to play the song everywhere else, unless you manually hide it there as well.

We understand that many of you seem to use the feature as a method to influence the algorithm's suggestions, so we're currently working on implementing an additional functionality where users will be able to "snooze" hidden tracks, thus excluding them in all recommendations and across all platforms for 30 days. That way, you can keep things fresh while leaving the door open for a future reunion. There's more info in this article, check it out, if you're interested.

That being said, we also hear you that hiding a particular song means you don't want to hear it ever again. Your feedback on this is important, as it may ultimately end up paving the way for our broader user experience. Thanks for sharing it here - we appreciate it. 💚

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your continued assistance with investigating this issue.

We're excited to announce that hiding songs is now available in playlists and albums on desktop too, and the feature should now sync across all your devices! 😎

We're still keeping the investigation open while we work on perfecting the hide song behavior. As always, we'll keep you folks posted as soon as we have any updates, stay tuned! 👍

Hey folks,

Have you tried @Mpeezy2309's method to see if that does the trick for you too?

@silent-watcher, the team was very grateful for your reproduction steps, but unfortunately they weren't able to replicate it on their end. They had some questions however, check them out below:

Spoiler
  1. Do your hides work at all? If you don’t follow the steps in your repro guide, but just go to a playlist in Your Library for example and hide a track, does that work?
  2. In the repro guide you mention “downloading” a playlist and then playing something from search before you switch to the playlist with items hidden. Is it necessary to download the playlist for it not to work? Does it have to be a track from search that is switched from?
  3. Does “Don’t play this artist” work? I.e. if you go to an artist page and select “Don’t play this artist” from the menu, are tracks where the artist is the main artist skipped?
  4. If you are in the playlist where the hides don’t work, and make a new hide, do the hides start working? What about removing an old one instead?
  5. In case you have another phone, or tablet, Android or iOS, are the hides that you made on your main phone also on the other device? i.e. the same tracks are grayed out in a playlist?

Let us know how it goes 👍

The hide button worked for me until they broke the button and made the whole button disappear a few months ago. The button is now back as of a week or so ago, but guess what, it doesn't actually work now. The songs no longer skip. I'm not sure if this is the same issue that has been a problem for years or if this is a new issue related to the button being completely removed, but wanted to chime in.

Edit: I'm using the Windows app and am on the latest version.

My Question or Issue

Hello,

I'm here to report a problem I've been having with hiding tracks in "Made for You" custom playlists on Android since April 9.

After hiding a track in a personalized playlist, the application behaves differently since April 9:

Before this date:

Several hours later, there was no trace of hidden tracks in the playlist. These songs never reappeared in the playlist where the hiding request was made.

Since April 9:

Tracks sometimes (not always) disappear after a few hours, BUT they return to the playlist two or three days later. When they do reappear, they're always well hidden but visible.

It was a great tool that I used very frequently to stop seeing tracks constantly reappearing in my personalized playlists. I confess to being rather disappointed by its disappearance. It's annoying to see unwanted tracks, even masked ones, in my custom playlists.

I sincerely hope that this problem will be investigated, as I would very much like to see this extraordinary feature reappear.

Sincerely,

Sam

Bug Report: Hidden Songs Still Play in Album Playback

Spotify Version: 30.56.65f

Device: Google Pixel 7

Operating System: Android 15

Album: "Sleep Piano Music" by Pryce

Plan: Premium

Issue:

I have hidden several tracks in the album "Sleep Piano Music" (for example, "Autumn Nights" and "Recognize"). Although these tracks are marked as hidden, they are still played when I listen to the album. The issue persists even after restarting the app and with the latest version installed. Each time I open the album, I have to unhide and then hide the tracks again to prevent them from playing, but this only works temporarily until I reopen the album.

Affected Songs (examples):

Autumn Nights

Hey folks,

@ultlp@silent-watcher@speedyrobin and @JacobKBU, we've checked with our engineers and since they're still unable to reproduce the issue, they're asking for permission to reset your passwords and log in to your accounts on Tuesday April 29th (EU working time, somewhere between 9 AM to 5 PM) so they can replicate it on their end.

As a heads up, you don't need to share your current password and at no point will this password be visible to anyone, however, you'll need to set up a new (different) one once the testing is done.

If you agree with this approach, please let us know by commenting in this thread.

Cheers,

@MihailY
I'm sorry but I do NOT consent to you accessing my account in this way. No one should have to access another person's account via means of resetting their password just to debug an issue. It also wouldn't give you a like-for-like test environment since the issue may only be present in combination with a specific device. As developers you are also likely to use development builds which, sometimes, can differ from your production builds. Also, you mentioned that hiding songs works per device. If the database of banned titles is stored on the device itself (not sure, haven't actually checked if that's the case) then logging in into someone's account on a separate device wouldn't allow you to replicate the issue at all.

@Yordan

I am currently away from home but will reply to all your points tomorrow.

What I can suggest though, is perhaps exploring an option to create a direct communication channel with your team and we could allocate some time for a technical call with a demo directly from my device? We could gather any additional logs (I've got root access to my device, we could examine your app logs direclty via system logs) and answer any questions on that call, too.

FYI, I am software engineer myself and since this issue annoys the **bleep** out of me (and other users), I'd be more than happy to commit some of my time and work with you to find the root cause. I've looked you up on StackShare and it looks like I'm very closely aligned in terms of your tech stack with your developers.

I'd be happy to sign any NDA / privacy clauses that you may require as a part of my involvement.

Hey @Yordan

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you. The weekend got in the way of me doing anything tech-related on Sunday.

Your questions sent me on a very interesting adventure through a series of inconsistent results. Thanks!

I am truly intrigued, and I'm beginning to see some patterns. I will be doing more testing tonight while simultaneously looking at low-level app logs. I've also started writing a proper test plan, with well-defined test cases for this.

In the meantime, one of your colleagues ( @little_computer ) got in touch with me and it looks like we will be working together to nail this down. 🐛

Another data point:

- Yesterday I was playing an album on Spotify Desktop and hid a handful of songs in that album. I played the album tracks sequentially, as I always do. The  hidden tracks were skipped and the feature worked as expected.

- This afternoon I played the same album on my Android phone and cast playback to my Google Play speakers. The hidden songs they were not skipped. This is also expected, as it's been clarified that the hidden song / skipped playback functionality does not sync across devices.

- This evening I played the same album again on my desktop. This time the songs were NOT skipped, even though they are still marked as hidden in Spotify Desktop.

I suspect that playing the album on my Android phone somehow "reset" some kind of internal flag that determines whether a track should play or not. Hope this helps!

Yordan

Thanks for your continued assistance, folks! 🙏

@mikkle, very interesting discovery, thanks for sharing! Just to confirm, are all hidden songs reset after casting to your speakers or just the ones you've just played while casting?

Keep us posted on this.
