Spotify keeps playing hidden songs

Since there is no option to delete a song from an album, I hide them and actually I missed that feature from apple music. So there is a lot of hidden songs in my album catalogue and now they just suddenly start to play. Updates and new device didn’t work. If even I hidden and unhide them again, next day same story. How can I fix that help?

Hi folks,

This should now be fixed for everyone running the following versions and above:

  • 📱 Mobile - 9.0.44
  • 🖥 Desktop - 1.2.64

In addition, we're excited to announce that hiding songs is now available in playlists and albums on desktop too, and the feature will now sync across all your devices!

⚠️ Note: Hiding a song makes it unplayable only in that specific playlist/album. This means that you'll still be able to play the song everywhere else, unless you manually hide it there as well.

We understand that many of you seem to use the feature as a method to influence the algorithm's suggestions, so we're currently working on implementing an additional functionality where users will be able to "snooze" hidden tracks, thus excluding them in all recommendations and across all platforms for 30 days. That way, you can keep things fresh while leaving the door open for a future reunion. There's more info in this article, check it out, if you're interested.

That being said, we also hear you that hiding a particular song means you don't want to hear it ever again. Your feedback on this is important, as it may ultimately end up paving the way for our broader user experience. Thanks for sharing it here - we appreciate it. 💚

Fix the old features before adding new ones. 🤬

Hey @Yordan ,

The snooze functionality sounds interesting but it sounds like you're not hearing what your userbase is trying to tell you.

When we hide a song, 9 times out of 10 it means that we do not want to ever hear it again. We need a global blacklist, affecting all contexts, not on a context-by-context basis, and without any time constraints.

Snooze won't fix that. I can see how snooze could be useful in a case where there is a song we still like but would not like to hear it at this moment in time, but it's a really niche use case. The use case we really need is hiding songs globally and without expiration date, like it used to be in the old Spotify.

It's really a very fundamental ask...

For many of us, music is a very personal, intimate subject, with some strong preferences and opinions, to the point where certain artists trigger a nearly allergic reaction. Do you really want your users to associate your product with strong negative emotions?

I'm afraid without this fundamental ability to permanently block songs you will keep annoying your userbase to the point where they will start leaving for your competitors.

My input .. When I hide a song or an Artist i want them hidden permanently everywhere across all platforms.. It should not be that difficult to implement.. I believe this has been the overwhelming input from all users... No one has asked for it to be snoozed for 30 days and such. If you want to do that . then make it an option. But I and most other users want it gone permanently.

@Anpan3

I see it like you. If I don't like a song, I don't like a song. Independent if that song is in a playlist or an album.

Dear staff from Spotify. Please note, that people feel sounds more intensely because they penetrate deep into the mind, unlike painting, for example. If someone doesn't like a song, and it is played several times, a feeling of inner disharmony quickly arises. If someone listens to an album and doesn't like a song, why would they want to listen to it in a playlist? So why should a song that someone doesn't like (hidden) appear several times in playlists and as to be hidden each time?

An example: I often take a shower and listen to music, and suddenly a song is played that I don't like. Since I can't just get out of the shower, I'm reluctant and disappointed to hear this song, which I had already faded out somewhere else. Please give it some thought.

Music is a sensitive thing, and nobody likes to listen to something they don't like, whether it's in a playlist or an album.

This is my opinion 🙂

If I hide a song I mean to hide it permanently!! Across all playlists, albums, platforms, devices.

The point of hiding songs and artists is to NEVER EVER HEAR THEM AGAIN. In any context.

So this current implementation of only „Hide in album“ is useless. I don’t want no stupid snooze either.

Spotify has to do this right. It’s been years.

While I understand that there is a use case for banning a song all together
I have a different use case that fits to the current implementation.

Some playlists have songs that don't fit (e.g. a loud song in a sleeping
playlist) but I still like the song in other playlists. So I don't want to
mute them everywhere.

Hence, I don't want the current implementation to change. I think global
banning is a different feature

Correct, @JacobKBU

They need the global banning on top of what already exists.

It's almost like they need a pop-up when you click on the "hide" button which shows options:

- Hide in this playlist/album/whatever.

- Hide everywhere.

- Hide artist.

We need choice.

Hi @Yordan

thanks for posting. Here's my opinion:-

  1. Hiding a song - this should hide it permanently - EVERYWHERE.  If I hide an artist, it hides all their songs everywhere.  We all have artists and songs we don't like and just don't want to hear - ever.  This is how a hide button should work.
  2. Snooze (for 30 days) - I love this idea as well, it's not as important as the Hide button but if the above was implemented then this is a great feature for when some of current new songs seems to be always played (keep popping up in playlists (e.g. day list / DJ X etc.).

My solution would be that the hide button offers two options, snooze for 30 or hide (but hide meaning hide forever - everywhere).  There then needs to be a list of songs / artists we've hidden in case we want to review.

I think users would agree - why not do a poll on here? 😀
Please keep the communication going/open it's refreshing to hear that Spotify are listening to their users.

cheers

Rob

Why can't I tell Spotify to not ever, EVER, play a song, EVER? Why can't I tell Spotify to not ever, EVER, play a band, EVER - ON A DESKTOP? Why are you giving different app experiences/options based on what client we're using? It's been almost two years since OP was posted, and it's been longer than that since we've been asking for a block song/block band feature - including *ON THE DESKTOP*.
