Spotify stops playing after an ad

We've received reports that Spotify pauses after an ad and the playback cannot be resumed. This seems to affect multiple platforms including desktop, mobile, and TV.

The behavior is currently being investigated.

Hey folks,

We just wanted to let you know that the right folks are looking into this.

We're not able to provide an exact timeline for a fix, but we'd recommend always keeping your Spotify app up to date to ensure you're on the latest version.

Thanks again!

Hey everyone,

Thank you again for sharing the requested details.

All reports have been forwarded to the team investigating this, however, they're still having difficulties tracing the root cause and need your help.

For this you'll just need to confirm you're willing to participate and share your device details if you haven't already. If you have, just share your current Spotify app version so we have the most up-to-date info.

Once you've done so, we'll post a confirmation in the thread that your account is being monitored by the devs and you'll need to reproduce the issue again giving us the timestamp of its last occurrence.

Hopefully, this will allow the team to spot the error and fix it.

Looking forward to your replies 🙏

Hey everyone,

We understand your frustration, however, we urge you to share the info requested, so the tech team can try to solve the issue for anyone who's still experiencing it. Most helpful would be:

  • Steps to replicate the error
  • Device (phone, TV, web player, Xbox console etc.)
  • Spotify version

Cheers,

catifsh
My Fire tv stick is still working fine. I assume Spotify fixed something in their software.

@MihailY the problem is that so many people have shared all of the information you’re asking for and Spotify has still failed to make any progress whatsoever towards finding a solution. I could probably go back through this thread and find at least a dozen posts with the info you’ve asked for

MihailY

Hey @Malonedogg5,

We fully understand your point and we apologize for not clarifying the current status of the investigation. The info shared previously has already been relayed to the team and based on the findings, a fix has been deployed recently (as evidenced by @catifsh's last few comments).

Seeing however that the issue still persists for you and some other users, we've decided to start a new investigation and collect the most current information. As soon as we have that, we'll relay it to the team.

We hope this sheds some light on the matter.

Spotify has continually crashed my Numan Unison player, always after playing for 30 seconds or so. Last week was fine - now problem has happened dozens of times over different days this week.

Other functions, such as internet radio are completely fine. Streaming Spotify to a laptop (on the same network) is fine.

Certainly sounds like a problem with Spotify, which began in a possible upgrade to their systems a few days ago...?

Tried: reboots of music player and whole network.  Different playlists.  Removing the device from Spotify and adding it back in.

I only noticed this issue after I was given a Firestick from my aunt. The post-ad pause will seldomly happen on my iPhone 12 mini or my Chromecast (2nd gen I think?). But it ALWAYS happens on my Firestick. I'm not sure how old it is as it's seconhand. It's so bad on the Firestick that I can turn my TV off and back on, open Spotify, and it's still frozen on the ad. The only solution is to reboot the Firestick, which is a pain. So I've just stopped listening to Spotify on what would otherwise be my primary music streaming device as it's in my living room. Definitely haven't been listening as much as I normally would.

I’m sorry, I meant to post this info weeks ago but going back through the thread it doesn’t look like it successfully posted.

I've logged out and back into my Spotify account. I’ve deleted and redownloaded the Spotify app. I’ve power cycled my console. I’ve deleted files from my Xbox and then redownloaded the Spotify app thinking it could be a memory problem. The only way I’ve been able to avoid this problem even some of the time is to open the Spotify app on my phone while it streams through my Xbox and the second an add comes I pause my game, open the iPhone app and actively keep it open as the ads play. IF the music resumes (only about 50% of the time), I’m able to close the iPhone app and resume my game until the next ad begins, then it’s another pause and back to keeping my iPhone awake while the ads play. If I don’t open the app on my iPhone within 5-10 seconds of an ad starting, there’s zero chance that my music will resume once the ad is finished. If the ad freezes playback, then I have to restart both the Xbox app and iPhone app to resume playback on either device

I have the same issue on my Television

TV: Samsung QLED 4K

TV version: 2501

Spotify version 2023.09.11_8_335910e

I tried updating to the latest version, uninstalling Spotify and then installing it again, deleting all caches from the tv, logging out of all devices. If I play on the television using Chromecast, I do not have this issue.

Mine started working normally, on my Roku Soundbar, a little over a month ago, without any action on my part. I was having no issues until last Friday when it froze after an ad, again. Nothing is changing in my configuration or how I use the app.

Still having issues with app stopping after ads. I force restart and only get 1 song played till ads start again. It happens every few times. Been going on for a few weeks.
