My Question or Issue

We are using Spotify Family for our kids. They are in an age where they are too old for spotify kids (which is too much restricted) and too young for a "fully opened" spotify account.

Every worked fine for a long time until "video podcasts" were introduced and there are now dozens of gaming youtube uploads on spotify with video which are not safe for children.

Therefore, I would be looking forward for an option to disable video content at all (in wifi and in mobile networks), similar to the "block explicit content" option.

Yeah, I can see this has been a problem for a few years. Spotify just doesn’t care. They give full access to basically YouTube inside the Spotify app with unmoderated videos with disgusting content. There are no controls for parents. I pay a lot for family account so my kids have music but I’m not going to pay for a terrible video service I want to block. I have to cancel my Spotify and go to another music service.

My kids have now reached the pre-teen/tween age where the kids app is no longer any good as it blocks too many of their fave songs. I was really shocked when I caught my 11 year old watching a minecraft video within the spotify app - and to make it worse, the story title did not imply that it was suitable for kids at all. I’ve just contacted the spotify support who could only suggest that I block specific podcast creators individually or each video in turn. And now I read that parents have been asking for control over this feature for a long time and yet nothing seems to have been done. Given how much we pay monthly for Spotify family this is really disappointing. I wish they could take out the videos and return it to a purely audio app. Now off to research the best alternative to spotify I guess… Sigh.

I cannot for the life of me see why video podcasts (and podcasts in general) cannot be deactivated in the Family control center.

The videos are completely unfiltered and there is extremely dangerous rubbish on there, it's absolutely crazy.

I'm so angry that this stupid video feature was introduced just like that. Spotify was really great before the podcasts. Now it's absolute trash. Dangerous trash. Why don't you care, Spotify employees? You like to mess with kids?

And Eni: I especially blame you for not giving this topic the priority it needs. You know there is a major issue, you confirmed it. And yet you decided to do nothing.

Also experiencing this issue, have bumped this thread to perhaps give it more visibility and encourage more people to click the support the idea button noted by Eni in the moderator response.  I am particularly unhappy about this as well - Spotify is music, there is / was no need to give unfiltered access to reels from YouTube and beyond on this app.  I will have to research different options for MUSIC streaming, which is sad given I have been a Spotify account holder since 2017 and actually prefer it to Apple Music. Until now.

  • I fully agree and would finally like to see Spotify giving parents the option to block video content, eg gaming podcasts. As long as this is not done, I have no other choice than to block the Spotify app for our son, which is a pity because he likes audiobooks and music.

Why doesn't Spotify care? It's pretty addictive to teens, and not the core interest of the app, right?

I have now canceled my family subscription. And I've made it my mission to let parents around me about the kind of content their kids are free to watch on Spotify. Every single person I talk to is shocked when they hear about this and then see it for themselves.

It seems like Spotify doesn't care and won't change.

Switched to Deezer 4 months ago because of this.

Thanks I blocked in my router

And it worked thanks !

So no solution since almost three years? Wow...

What a joke. I have the highest plan for many years and it's called 'family', but I have no option to protect my family from the garbage it offers. NO responsibility on Spotify side, just $$$$. Time to move on to another service provider.

I want my child to LISTEN to music, but don't want them WATCHING stuff.  Please make this a preference of some kind.

Yes, should be simple - I want audio content only. No video, podcasts, or other such rubbish>
Let me on MY subscription I pay for choose what is appropriate.
There is way to much uncensored content appearing within what I want as a streaming music service.
Getting very close to moving my subscription to another platform that supports what I want  - Music, Music, and ONLY music 😞
