Playlist background not matching the playlist icon

Playlist background not matching the playlist icon

Device

My Question or Issue

After uploading a photo for my playlist, the background stays gray. The picture isn't gray though. I've tried reinstalling Spotify but it still doesn't work. In fact, if I upload a blue box the playlist background will still be gray.

Hey folks,

Thanks for all your replies and for the info shared.

Our team has made some changes backstage and everything should be working well now. Could you please take a look and let us know if you notice this still happening on your side? If yes, we'd suggest you perform a clean reinstall of the app on the affected devices.  You can follow the steps in this article to do it.

If you've performed the reinstallation, but you've noticed this is still happening, we'll need you to send us the following:

  • Make/model and OS of the affected device.
  • Exact Spotify version you're running on the affected device.
  • A screenshot of what you're seeing in the affected playlist along with the link to it.

Keep us in the loop!

Hey @RankedPanda7918,

Thank you for posting in the Community!
Does this happen for all your playlists or just this specific one?
Would you mind also letting us know which market you're a part of?
(the country you reside in)

We'll be on the lookout for your response 🙂
Thanks!

Hi Vasil, I am having the same problem with my playlist background staying Grey even though the photo is predominantly purple. I am based in the US and here is the link to the playlist page: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/67dR9IKmyVYtcaF7Hd1YLL

Thanks!

Hey, I too am having the same problem but only for 1 playlist
the other playlists have the correct background corresponding to the icon
I reside in the middle east

Mine needs fixing too, Its called lotus vibes. If u could check it please and fix it..

I have the same issue. Needs urgent fix as people can not publish public playlists anymore.

this shite needs to be fixed man... surely this small thing cant take much time anyway its just competence at this point but something tells me they dont care enough to fix such 'small' things

I am in the USA and also have this problem with Spotify's auto background colors for playlists based on images. I have the problem with both pngs and jpgs.  It makes for a horrible look and user experience! And the users should be able to manually customize their background colors anyway.

This has been an issue for ages. PLEASE fix. It cannot be that hard.

I am begging y'all to fix this issue. This is a problem with a lot of my playlists as well. There should also be an option to choose the playlist background color. It ruins the aesthetics on the sites I try to embed my playlists in. Please fix the issue as I've seen lots of people complain about it. It may seem minor but it does feel aggravating to not be able to control.

i think its the same for profile pictures as well. i just changed mine and the backround is grey 😞

it's frustrating to see that people have been complaining about this for a while and it still hasn't been fixed

Same problem here. So far I never had any problems matching my background colors with the pictures, but since two says ago, the one's I've recently created have become grey even though one of them is mostly red and yellow, and the other is green. Don't think this is a big enough problem to take so much to fix.

Hi,

for me uploading a playlist image and getting the matching background color still does not work.

I tried this with old and new playlists and different images in different sizes and formats. The background still stays gray and does not change to the expected background-color.

I emptied the cache, did a clean reinstall and rebooted my computer. This is some further information:

Some ideas on this topic:

  • I have the idea it could have to do something with a deeper topic like hardware acceleration or anything like this on the client side.
  • Another idea would be that it's actually not a bug but a feature. After around a week the background-color actually adjusts to the image. That means the functionality is not broken it just delays very, very much. Is this maybe the wanted behavior of Spotify for some reason (like saving server processing time)?

Anyhow I would really appreciate that this gets treated seriously as it's a core feature of Spotify. I am very willing to help with testing and providing information on the client side. It just really should get fixed.

Hey @simon_bolando,

Thanks for your reply and for all the info shared, it really helped us.

We couldn't replicate the behavior described on our end. See below:

The background is taking the color of the image. So, we'd like to gather some additional info. Do you notice if this is happening as well on the web player? If not sure, it'd really helpful if you check.

On another note, can you replicate this behavior on a different computer? You can ask for the computer of a relative or a friend to open your account and check.

Lastly, since you mentioned it's a delay, would you mind sending us a video recording of you changing the image in this playlist when we can see said delay? You can attach the video in your next reply in mp4 format, or you can also upload it to YouTube or Google drive and make it public, so we can visualize it.

i think this is what is happening to me. i changed the pictures for a lot of my playlists and all the backgrounds are still grey and its been a few days since I changed them. it used to take 24hrs for the background color to generate, but I'll check in a week to see if its still grey

but seriously if the tech staff at spotify could make it so that we could manually pick the color we wanted as the background for each playlist based on the cover image, it would make things so much easier

My playlist background color matches my cover image BUT it is not showing up in the color selector for the embed... only grey or black. Is that due to a delay or am I dealing with an error?  How can I fix this?

I am also having this issue. Color seems fine but when embedding is only light or dark grey options.
