gift card. Useless?

My Question or Issue

My son got a spotify gift card for Christmas. He's already a part of my family plan and I just saw the fine print(after trying to redeem) that it can only be used for a Individual Spotify Premium account. Which seems absolutely ridiculous. From viewing other posts it seems my options are pretty limited. Do I have any options? Can I return it to Amazon(where it was bought) for credit? Complain as loudly as I can?

Thanks for coming to the Community.

Unfortunately, Gift Cards cannot be redeemed for discounted plans like Premium Student, Premium Family, Premium Duo, or trial offers. They can only be used for Premium Individual.

You can try reaching out to the store it was bought at to see if a refund is possible. 🙂

It appears the solution is to change the main account to a Premium Individual, apply the gift card, and then change your plan back to whatever you had before. You wont get the full year or whatever of the gift card, but at least it won't go to waste. After that you'll need to re-add any additional members.

Spotify is greedy. Unlike almost any other company, their gift cards have virtually no value if you already have an account. The answer here to to cancel your account and restart it? What about everyone else on my account?! They just go without for 3 months or whatever it takes? I have a stupid $30 gift card, worth nothing, and it would only be a month and a half value on my plan, why not let me use it. Honestly, you pay for the card dollar to dollar for the gift card, and for it to be completely useless feels like a scam. Actually this is a scam, forget the "feels like it." I honestly think this is a horrible, deceptive practice. Someone should sue, because I bet every single person who bought these gift cards assumed they could use them, and we can't.
