Changes to Web API

Changes to Web API

Folks, some news on changes to the web API has been posted on the Spotify For Developers blog.

We want to reiterate the main message from the blog that we're committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all Spotify stakeholders. As such we have recently made some important changes related to access to some of our endpoints and functionality. You can read the details on the blog: https://developer.spotify.com/blog/2024-11-27-changes-to-the-web-api

We are here to listen to any feedback you may have.

Bad move.

I used to like Spotify Debup app. It basically connected to your account and found any duplicate tracks. Not the same as URI metod, it also watched for time, artist, track name etc. I was able to find and remove duplicates easily. API removal made this tool useless as it is no more in works. I am sad and depressed about this for days. Not to tell much about developers.

Please make it back in works or provide the same tools inside Spotify.

I‘m really disappointed by this move. A lot of potential ideas of the community are now not possible anymore. I also worked on an app that made extensive use of some of those APIs.

I really hope Spotify reverts those changes or at least finds a way to make it possible to access the data in other ways.

It's so disapointed by Spotify's total silence in this HUGE thread completly ignoring the problems everyone apparently has with that sudden restrictions. It's such a shame and i'm disilluisoned and that is changing my view of Spotify as a company.

Hoping i'm wrong 😕

Hi. For the last 6 months (and for the next few months) I've been working on my master's dissertation, which basically depends on the Audio Features API. Without it, I'm going to have to completely rework the idea and it's very difficult for me to finish my studies in the allotted time. Is there, please, any solution? I'm getting desperate!

i want to get lyrics by api,But i dont how to gei it。because not fround by api docs

If it's not in the docs it's not possible via the official APIs.

And in any case, that's got absolutely nothing to do with this issue so start a new topic about that and do not hijack this one.

Can you provide services in a rate-limited way, or with usage-based pricing? Just like current AI APIs?

I think this new measure might not prevent those with malicious intent, but instead impacts developers who actively use the Spotify API to help expand Spotify's influence and revenue.

My previous project took over a month to develop, and recently when I tried to use it again, I discovered this issue. This has made my project almost completely useless. I'm just an individual developer - why treat us this way? It's really cruel.

I hope Spotify will seriously reconsider reopening these API endpoints. Without this API, I'll be completely unable to compete against competitors who can still use the service.

The only thing keeping me using Spotify has been the API access. Like many here, I've been using it to aggregate new tracks to check out and then share those tracks (linked back to Spotify) with friends. Now, it looks like I might as well move to a different service, and stop encouraging my social network to use Spotify. It wouldn't be nearly so much salt in the wound if you didn't say you're here to listen to feedback, then refuse to respond in the slightest.

This is either mindless spam (no thanks) or a trojan (also, no thanks). Don't post here.

@soundsta

Do you have an email or something I can use to get into contact with you? Can't find anything on the website, I have a few questions

hi, you can write me **bleep**

Br

Hi, check in footer on my website soundtat.info

Would it be possible for apps that were in development to get back access to the deprecated end points?

I cant Verify my email for the Dashboard, Every time i click the link that's emailed to me it says the site cant be reached.

My app was also dependant audio features information for helping create good playlists. Now it is gone 😞 I was thinking of doing the audio features analysis on our side, but that would require downloading the audio. Is Spotify represented in this thread? What alternatives do you see?

Spotify responded once in this thread. It was a pointless response containing no information. Don't waste your time trying to find it. Downloading and analysing Spotify's audio data is against their ToS but this is the direction they have pushed people. There's a website advertised in this thread that seems to offer exactly this service, for a fee. Alternatively, you can break some other rules and access the API with Spotify's own client ID with a little effort. There's information on how to do that outside of this forum. If Spotify are going to screw over their developer community they can expect the same respect back.

Hi tomas,

I am in almost the exact same situation (it's just an undergraduate instead of a master's). I am re-working my idea *right now* because I have just noticed that this API change is why all my requests weren't working. I don't think things are going to get any better 😞

This change sucks. I've been a paying premium subscriber for 10+ years now, and reconsidering it after user-hostile moves like this. All I wanted is whatever the api was providing strictly for personal-use - personal data analytics, like knowing the song audio analysis of what I'm listening to, programmatic control, integration with home assistant etc. Now, my overall feeling is the product I'm paying for is increasingly hostile towards me. Stuff like this will eventually lead to Sonos-like fiascos.

From the blog:

As we continue to review the experience provided on Spotify for Developers, we've decided to roll out a number of measures with the aim of creating a more secure platform.

* Well, you are obviously not monitoring this thread or the experience of people in it

* `of creating a more secure platform` - Secure for whom? Securing your walled garden?

Oh no... I JUST took notice of this. I've been designing an app around these exact apis on and off for a year! What a huge blow. This will be hard to recover from. -_-.

I would expect at least the bare minimum for music enthusiasts: tempo, key

I went to a job interview, heavily relying on one of the apps in my portfolio that used the deprecated endpoints. Needless to say the were not impressed.
