We know that our users love creating their own playlists to capture key moments in time – in fact, playlists created by users often become their most-streamed playlist for the first several months but listening to these playlists slowly fades overtime, and users are eager to discover new music.
With this in mind, we’re excited to launch a new play mode called Smart Shuffle that keeps listening sessions fresh and provides personalized recommendations that perfectly match any listeners’ playlist vibe.
This update will roll out to Premium users on mobile devices starting today.
How does Smart Shuffle work?
Introductory page
How the queue will look
Adding and removing recommendations.
Different playback options.
What about the Enhance feature?
For now, Smart Shuffle will replace the Enhance feature.
What will happen to Discover Weekly and other regularly updated playlists?
For the time being, no changes to those will be made. Smart Shuffle aims to improve the listening experience for user curated playlists.
Does this mean that using Smart Shuffle will cause my carefully curated playlists to get cluttered with new recommendations?
No! Your original playlist remains untouched, so you can add any new track that catches your ear. Smart Shuffle won’t change your playlist without your explicit permission. What changes instead is what you'll hear during each specific listening session
🌟 I would like to disable Smart Shuffle permanently. Can I do that?
Yes, you can! Just go to Settings and privacy and then to Playback and toggle the option Enable all play modes to off. This will mean you will only have the regular shuffle.
Note: This option is for Premium users only.
We hope you're as excited as we are about this new play mode. The official Newsroom announcement is out, you can check that out too. For any and all feedback on the matter you may have, you're more than welcome to comment in the thread below.

Please bring back the enhanced feature. It was so easy to find the new songs and add them to the playlists. Smart shuttle makes it so much harder to figure out what's been added and give feedback about the recommendations.
I didn't go through all the hassle of curating my playlists for Spotify to pollute it with paid-for-play **bleep**. Just let me play the music I want and not the music YOU want. I have paid for my subscription after all.
The best part: When negative / constructive criticism has 10x more likes, than the original post of the feature.
TIME TO START LISTENING TO YOUR USERS, AND NOT YOUR AD REVENUES OR MONEY MILKERS
I don’t like that when I go off-line or I lose service I can’t use my Spotify because it auto turns on the smart shuffle and I can’t access my music even off-line when I have premium
Give me enhance back please. This feature is not it.
When will Smart Shuffle come to PC? It's really useful for finding new music, but I spend most of my time listening to spotify from my PC.
I discovered the "Enhance" feature on the phone app not long ago, and I immediatly fell in love as it was a great feature, non intrusive, and easy to use. I was able to quickly add songs to my playlist that were recommended, and the fact that it added 3 more songs everytime I added one meant that I could let the app play them right after when I was in "no shuffle" mode.
Now with "Smart Shuffle", it's intrusive, I cannot quickly add new songs as I can only "like" them, then I have to add them on my playlist manually, I cannot discover multiple similar songs at once, and I face a lot of the other issues that are already mentioned by others comments.
For now, I'm sticking to the desktop version as it still have "Enhance" which is inconvenient because my PC does not fit well in my pocket. I would love to see "Enhance" back on the phone version, or at least a similar feature that behave the same but right now Smart Shuffle does not hold a candle to Enhance.
I effing HATE the smart shuffle feature. Have to toggle 3 times just to get back, but what’s REALLY REALLY annoying is that when it’s turned off I get a playlist of the songs that are not in my playlist. For example when I turn off Smart Shuffle regardless of what song I just finished listening to, I get nothing but Logic songs. I love Logic even going to his concert but hate everytime I turn off Smart Shuffle, nothing but Logic is in my queue.
I HATE IT! I just my playlist to play in the order it is in! Even when I toggle off the sh*tty Smart Shuffle the next songs are not on in playlist order.
Hey Joan,
I just realized that (I assume) since this new smart shuffle feature dropped, I haven't been able to sort, filter or search within my personal playlists.. is someone working on putting those features back in?
(For the Android app)
The only way to draw attention to Spotify (who don't care obviously) is to inundate the store rating with 1-star, bad reviews about it. I would suggest to start putting in your lowest rating reviews and let's see what happens next.
I hate this smart shuffle nonsense
Its really annoying trying to reshuffle my playlist and it goes into smart shuffle! I just want to shuffle my music and having to spam the shuffle button causes the app to freeze. Please let us disable smart shuffle
i hate this feature and I dont want recommended (sponsored) songs in my playlists
why can't this be turned off. I just want to shuffle my songs and not have to wait 3 business days to do it. sometimes it fails to load at all and I have to completely exit and reload spotify and try again. so stupid
I’ve never commented on something like this in my life, but this “feature” is beyond obnoxious and makes it impossible to switch between regular shuffle and no shuffling. Please change this and at least make smart shuffle a separate button. Horrible!
I’ve had spotify since 2011, this smart shuffle feature is beyond obnoxious and needs to be changed. There needs to be a separate button for it. This makes it extremely annoying to change between regular shuffle and no shuffling at all. There’s a 20-30 second lag when changing the setting now and no one even cares about this feature in the first place. Never commented on anything like this in my life but this deserved it haha
Please get rid of this feature, it’s so incredibly obnoxious when trying to change between regular shuffle and no shuffling at all, I can’t even believe you’d release it to the public. It needs to be a separate button
Cmon Spotify. You have people in your own forum again confused and asking why they’re still getting recommended songs in their shuffle AS A PREMIUM SUBSCRIBER. At this point, premium is becoming false advertising with all the paid placements in the app. Focus up and give us back prime Spotify.
