Battery drain, overheating and lagging when using Spotify

Battery drain, overheating and lagging when using Spotify

My Question or Issue

For about three or four days now, the app starts to lag pretty badly after just a few minutes of clicking through artists libraries and streaming different songs. The battery of my iPhone also starts to heat up very quickly because of this. Spotify becomes pretty much unusable because of the lag. It does NOT crash the app though. So the music will keep playing in the background, and if I leave the phone as is, the battery also cools down soon after. Performance issues will remain however until I force close the app.

Hi there @bilbobeuli,

Thanks for reaching out. We'll be glad to help you get the app working as usual again.

To start off, perform a full clean reinstall if you haven't already, as that's know to resolve a multitude of issues and hopefully clearing any corrupted cache and resyncing the service will do the trick here too. For the battery drain issues, if not entirely from the app itself, consider also following the steps in the pinned comment here.

Let us know how it goes.

Same here on iPhone 16 pro & iPad Pro with iOS 18.5 & have tried all the usual trouble shooting to no avail. Using Spotify Premium for many years & never encountered this issue before

same! been having this issue for about a week now and have ran every troubleshooting method i can find with zero success.

the usual troubleshooting methods are not resolving this issue at all.

Hi,

I am having the overheating / battery issue. I have no lag on my device.
ios 18.5, iPhone 16 Pro Max, Spotify Version 9.0.56.627
Local files are disabled
I only listened to a podcast in the background

iPhone 16

iOS 18.5

Spotify version 9.0.56.627

I've tried a clean reinstall. running in low power mode, restarting the phone. I've even reached out to Apple and it's not an issue with the phone. they said it's likely app specific.

Local files are disabled.

I'm experiencing it everywhere on the app. If I'm listening to music, or even not, and continuing to browse the app, the phone will overheat, battery will drop rapidly, and the screen is laggy. If I exit the app and just allow the music to play in the background, it's fine. It's only when actively using the Spotify app.

Not too sure on how to share these issues in a video.

yes, here as well. Never had any issues....but I'd say since a few month I have those problems.

First few minutes are okay than the app starts to be extremely laggy. sometimes when I switch to an artists page the music stops completely like the whole processor is busy with that task. everything happens in slow motion and than the music continuous. All while the back of the Iphone gets hoter and hoter.

Iphone 11 standard - latest iOS.

Hey there folks,

Thanks for all your replies and for the info shared.

@bilbobeuli, @LittleMissMusicHead, just to confirm, are you still noticing this issue on your devices? If yes, it'd be awesome if you could send us all the info mentioned by @Mihail above.

@angelea, we really appreciate all the info you send us. Would you send us a short video of this behavior? You can attach the video to your next reply in mp4 format, or upload it to YouTube or Google Drive and make it public.

@Executek, it'd be awesome if you let us know about any troubleshooting steps you've tried so far. If possible, send us a video, so we can have a better look at this behavior.

We'll be around!

Hi,

I already reinstalled the app. I am unsure about the video, as I am not noticing anything visible.

Here is a video of the issue. It runs for about 2-3 minutes and you'll see that by the end: my battery has dropped 3 percent, and you'll notice the lag at the end of the video. This is on top of my phone overheating. And I do not have any apps running in the background throughout the duration of the clip. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1EwTfJczHcB9gGWD6_5IlbBnXU66-1MaE

Hey there,

Thanks for following up!

@angelea - kudos for including a video, however, it seems like the link to it is currently restricted. Could you double-check the current settings to make sure that privacy is set to public, as we otherwise won't be able to see it.

@Executek - as you've already tried a reinstall, would you mind also disabling Background App Refresh to see if you notice any difference? To do this, go to the device's Settings > General > Background App Refresh > toggle off Spotify's access. Also, if the issue persists, does this only happen when you're listening to podcasts? Or have you noticed similar behavior with playlists and albums too?

Keep us posted 🙂

I've adjusted the setting. Please let me know if this one works.

Thanks @angelea,

We've now forwarded this to our tech team and we'll keep you posted on any updates in this thread.

For anyone else who still hasn't shared their device details here, please do so as this will help speed up the investigation.

Cheers,
