Please come through with this feature to remove cached files from ios devices. This is simply lazy and greedy of Spotify.
Aside from the obvious time and horrible experience, uninstall / reinstall method will kill data usage on iphones. Yes wifi, wifi, wifi but to hell with these workarounds. Do what's right. Have some pride in your application.

I am happy to say that I have successfully filed a bug report with Spotify, supplying this thread and the one Peter referred to to back up my complaint. By successfull I mean that the "Execute Team" (support staff) was made aware of the issue. And I have gotten conformation that it has been "escalated further" via the the proper channels.
It seemed like unsyncing as Meredith proposed upthread is supposed to free up space occupied by offline playlists.
So now they are doing something. Thanks, eveyone who chimed in and made some noise. It may well have made a difference. I contacted support via the web form Friday may 9 and got a response Sunday evening the 11th. The 15th I got conformation that the issue had been forwared further.

Martin
I discovered I cant even delete offline files on mac osx. So i went ahead and deleted the contents of the storage folder at user/library/cache/... Spotify then prompted me that offline feature is disabled on my mac...??? Im on premium... and I thought the story cant get any better (sarcasm very intended).

Yeah, I as well thought that i ought to be easy to do it that way earlier on. But I never did figure out which cache files did what (and of course we should not have too). I gather that missing bookkeeping files eg. /Users/../Library/Caches/com.spotify.client/offline.bnk could confuse the app. or maybe if that is still there but referenced cache files under /Users/Martin/Library/Caches/com.spotify.client/Storage/0x/ are missing it might act up. If you removed offline.bnk, try restoring that (here's hoping that you have set up Time Machine) and if that does not work make sure that both cache under Storage and the bookkeping file are removed... There is also the possibility that cache files marked as clear for removal when you unsync but will not in actuality be removed until a sweep later on. That may be acceptable on the Desktop as space is not that much of an issue there, and Merediths response upthread or if it was in the other one seem to indicate that is the case "unsync and wait a few minutes" (how long?). Clearly that does not suffice on a phone. When unsyncing playlist I need the space to be freed up immediately so as to be able to rotate playlists on the phone.
I was satisfied because at least the iPhone offline-issue is no longer a support matter (well, yes it is the person I was in contact with will send an update when he gets info on the progress) and so things are at least moving along a bit. But caching in general is still an issue. Those people who have service plans with unlimited data transfer have the problem of the stream cache of repeatedly played songs (used by Spotify to save on band width) never gets cleared, hence the movement for a manual "remove cache"-button and there is the problem you have....

@martin_, that makes sense that spotify caches to save on bandwidth...

Don't get me wrong! In no way do I think it is reasonable to not have fixed this obviously crucial functionality already. Actually, before I even became a subscriber in decemer 2013. Still, I would suspect that it is not necessarily as trivial an alteration as you make it sound. Freeing up space when tracks are unsynced, that is. I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. It might have slipped through the cracks earlier. Not so this time.
and it's why I closed my account and switched to Deezer , which does of course have a clear cache button and also immediately frees space when a playlist is unsynced.
I am willing to give them a little time since they have stated that things are moving.... I have just glanced at Deezer. I understand that they do not have a native player on the desktop. Are you satisfied with the web app? I need it on the desktop as well as on my iPhone. Also, I read that there are issues with the sound quality but perhaps that is no longer a problem. If Deezer is good and Spotify does not repair the app for IOS soon I will switch, though.

Martin

Just been reading with great interest this thread and wondering if this issue has been fixed
I hope he doesn't bite off my head, but I have an assurance from Daniel Fretwell (Exectutive support staff at Spotify) that the developers have been informed and that a fix is planned for a future update. He had not been given a date, I guess they avoid doing such things, nor a promise that it will be in the next update... It is somewhat disconcerting, but I assume it means that it is a non-trivial alteration. Since an assurance has been given, I can wait. Sure, Spotify is cosiderably less useful on iOS but I don't use it only on iOS. Also, I'm in Sweden and the only alternative to Spotify here is Deezer and they don't make their entire library available at 320 kbps, apparently only 128 kbps for less popular albums, which kind of makes them not an alternative for me.

iOS 7.0 opened up the API to allow third party apps access to app cache, and this app has an option to delete "junk files" (i.e. cache) from apps like Spotify. I usually run it a couple of times in a row, and I've cleared up to a gig or more of free space (per the iOS settings app). Hope this helps! 🙂
I use Battery Doctor, but sadly it does not remove unsynced Spotify cache for me. Hope it works for others! It does all seem quite haphazard. For me it sometimes works directly from the Spotify app, a few times the chace has been removed days later, but the vast majority of attempts make no difference. I'm guessing the Spotify app must indicate cache as "fair game" for a third party app solution to work? Certainly it is worth an attempt for those who have not tried it yet. It's is a bit of a mess. On the up side it works on your phone, and there have been others who report that they have no problem at all. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a robust solution from Spotify sooner rather than later.

This is not a solution. I just logged off on my phone and logged back in, and the cache was cleared.

iPhone Data Eraser can help you delete data completely for operation efficiency and privacy protection. You can just follow the three easy steps below to go ahead in order to delete songs from iPhone.
Step 1.Install iPhone Data Eraser and connect your iPhone to computer.
Step 2.Choose "Erase All Data on Device" on the list.
Step 3.Start to earse all data on your device now.
After that, your iPhone can be much more relieved.

I assume that this can be done selectively, either specific songs or only the cache? I only see the option to erase all data. What am I missing?

Hi everyone, I don't know if this can help but I had the same problem and the app "Battery Doctor" cleaned cache from some apps (including Spotify) in the "Junk" area. Before that, Spotify was using 2,0GB and now is using 800MB. You can try that!
We NEED this! I have songs I want to sync, but it won't let me unsync what is already synced to make room for the new. WTH!
