What type of iPod do you have?

If its an iPod touch, then use of the Spotify application requires a premium subscription (unless you are in the US, then you can have free radio!) as it does on all mobile devices.

If its an Ipod nano classic or shuffle, then Spotify can only be used to sync local tracks which you already own to that device, no matter what subscription plan you are on, since there is no supported Spotify application to decode tracks on those devices.

What about my iPhone?

I have a 4S and I'm still only being allowed to sync local files.

AND I'm a premium user.

Hey! Welcome to the community 🙂

You can use the Spotify app on your iPhone to access Spotify. Just download and install it from the App Store and then log in using the same details you do on the desktop. Your playlists will be there waiting for you. If those playlists have local files in them, then you can sync those local files to the mobile application by connecting your phone and computer to the same WiFi network, full instructions are here.

My iPod is an iPod touch, however this notification came to me when I was using spotify for iOS4, but thank you for your reply

Hey, I'm currently using the 30 day trial of premium and i still can't synch playlists that I've made to my ipod classic, capacity isn't an issue and whilst I'm still able to get local files across i get the same old "only local files synced" nonsense. Can you please explain, seeing as I WILL be paying for premium how to get my playlists of music from spotify (ie; not itunes or my computer in general) to my ipod.

Hey! Welcome to the community 🙂

I would suggest you have a read at this topic regarding syncing of iPod classics, nanos and shuffles.

Due to application restrictions on those devices, it is not possible to transfer any content from the Spotify catalogue (ie. content that you do not own) to those devices. You can however use Spotify to sync your device with any local files which you have stored on your computer as mp3's (music you have purchased or own).

I'm using the iPod Nano (manufactured and purchased in 2010), and I have a Premium account, and while I can sync any and all music I want to my Android phone, iPod says "only local files were synced". Is the Nano not compatiblw with Spotify? The SOLE purpose I purchased it was to sync with my iPod (my Samsung Galaxy s3 is a little clunky to use while at the gym!). Am I S.O.L. then?

So totally had to look up what S.O.L meant there! 😛

Unfortunately, yes non-smart iPods (classics, nanos and shuffles) can only be used with Spotify to sync local files just like iTunes. It is not possible to sync any content from the Spotify catalogue to those devices since they don't have a supported application. Jude (an old staff member) did a nice job of explaining why here

I sure wished I'd known that before deleting everything off my iPod! (And no, I didn't backup anything because I thought "Why should I Need to? I have all I want on Spotify!") *Pulls hair out*

I seem to be having a similar problem. I have paid for a premium spotify, however I cannot get any music onto any of my ipod devices. I have an iPod Touch 2nd generation that cannot get your spotify app and so I can't put any music on that. I also have an iPod mini that seems to only take local files that I already have. I have not had ANY success and would like to figure this out. I would like to get the music that I am paying for each month and put it on my iPod so that I can actually listen to it on the go! Please help!!!

Spotify can only sync local files to devices that don't have a supported Spotify app.

There is more information about why it is only possible to sync local files to an iPod classic, mini, nano or shuffle in this post.

I can see Adam-W has left a reply on your other post, unfortunately an iPod nano can not access tracks in the Spotify catalogue. There is more detail in this topic

Hi I am trying to sync my IPod nano and I thought you could when your on spotify premium but it doesn't seem to be working can you help?
Heather

Hey Heather! Welcome to the community 🙂

Unfortunately, it is not possible to sync content from the Spotify catalogue to any device which does not have a supported Spotify application, and an iPod nano is one of those devices. There is more information about why this limitation exists over in this topic

Hey! Welcome to the community 🙂

Are you trying to sync an iPod classic, mini, shuffle or nano?

If so, it is not possible regardless of your subscription to sync any content from the Spotify catalogue to those devices, since they don't have a supported Spotify app. There is more information here

I don't understand. If the sync doesn't work with devices such as the iPod Classic, what is the point of even having the feture with spotify as you can use the app on other devices to connect to spotify, or use the offline feture?

From the linked topic:

Spotify isn't just about streaming. It is also a local media player. Spotify aims to gather together all your music in one place, so that you can combine Spotify's online catalogue with music files that you already own. Syncing of local music files to your iPod is one of the media player functions that Spotify offers.

Spotify aims to be a place for your local music and your streaming library to come together, hence why iPod syncing is offered in the same way in which iTunes does it, so you only need 1 media player for all of your content and device syncing.

All Spotify content is required to be played back through a supported Spotify application, whether that app is on the desktop, or on a mobile device such as a phone or tablet, so that, the track play counts can be accurately recorded. This allows artists to be fairly compensated for all of their content being listened to accross the entire Spotify network.

Also, if it was possible to sync to an iPod, there would be no way of preventing you (in the current setup) of paying for 1 month of premium, synching all of the music in the world (not possible, but you can see where its going) and then cancelling your subscription, meaning you would effectively walk away with a lifetimes worth of music for 1 premium payment.
