Shuffle not working on iOS

Hey folks!

Some of you have reported that Shuffle isn't working on iOS. Nothing happens when you tap on the Shuffle icon - only Smart Shuffle seems to work.
This is being looked into 🙂

While this is being looked into, let us know the following details:

1.  Your device's make & model, as well as its OS version
2. Your Spotify app version
3. Does Shuffle not appear as an option in the playlist view and is it shown in the 'Now Playing' view?
4. Description of the exact issue:
     a) Does Shuffle turn off after selecting a particular song?
     b) Are the Shuffle and repeat buttons completely greyed out and unclickable?

It would be of help if you could share with us a short video recording or a link to e.g. an unlisted YouTube video/ Google Drive upload of what is going on on your ends.

Much appreciated! We'll keep you posted.

All my members of my Premium family plan are having the same issue.

Please note that this has been marked as "Under Investigation" as of October 3. This is nearly 2 months and the issue has not yet been resolved. Considering that in 2024, Spotify made about $1.3 billion per month you would think that they could afford the resources to get this fundamental issue resolved.

There have been 13 individual updates since the error was "being looked in to" so telling people just to wait for the next update is not good enough.

Can someone please explain to me why, after 13 updates, this has still not been fixed!!!

And how will Spotify recompense those affected by this problem?

Some genuine feedback from Spotify would be appreciated!

I started having this issue yesterday (iPhone 15 Pro, iOS 18.2.1, 9.0.98.1187). I’ve reinstalled the app many times, but nothing works. The only way to shuffle now is by going into the song’s playback page, which is really inconvenient.

I’ve been dealing with the same issue for about a month now. The shuffle button outside of the “now playing page” doesn’t react other than a flash when clicked, it stays grey. I’ve tried logging out of all my devices at once and made my iPhone 14pro the sole Spotify user and still had no change. I’ve done all the trouble shooting (clearing the cache, deleting the app and data from my settings, resetting my phone, redownloading the app, and logging in manually) but nothing changed. I’ve also updated my phone to the latest version of iOS (26.1 as of this time) and still got nowhere. Spotify support simply told me that it was something they would fix on their end, but the most recent update was about a week ago and I’ve seen no change.

Same issue for me, when I try to play an album it doesn’t start with the first song and the shuffle icon is not responsive at tapping. Tried reinstalling, login in/out, nothing works and it happens for some time and many updates didn’t seem to fix the problem. A little bit embarrassing for a company that justifies the price increases just because they need to offer unrivalled experience for users. So, no improvement, I just started to hear real lossless since the last update (until now it was the same awful sound even the lossless option was activated), but I noticed on my Mac there’s no issue with shuffle (maybe only it actually activate every time) and another interesting thing: on iPhone after you press play for an album and it starts with a random track it seems that the shuffle is on when you check the track screen, but again when you revert to the main page of the album the shuffle is inactive. Really, Spotify? Spend some money from your big profits and fix this issue, not keep increasing the price as we are shareholders. Even Tidal is doing much better on their app, not to mention Apple Music. Embarrassing.

it’s really discouraging to see that people have had this issue for a very long time time but it still has not been resolved. I’ve had this issue ever since I’ve gotten premium with this new account so I hope it gets resolved much sooner than later

I’ve noticed that on iOS, the shuffle button in the playlist header does not toggle at all, even though shuffle works correctly from the Now Playing screen.

I’ve tested this with:

  • Regular user-created playlists (not algorithmic playlists like Daily Mix, Discover Weekly, or Liked Songs)

  • “Enhance” mode turned off

  • Default sorting applied

  • Fully updated Spotify app

  • Reinstalled the app and cleared cache

The shuffle button in the playlist header visually registers the tap but does not change state, while shuffle works fine in Now Playing. This seems like a bug where the playlist header button is disconnected from the playback engine on iOS devices.

It would be helpful if Spotify could investigate this and restore proper functionality so that the playlist header shuffle works consistently with Now Playing.

My Question or Issue

In any of my playlists, with the shuffle feature on (not smart shuffle, just regular), it will play a random song first, but then it will continue through my playlist in the order that it's in, not shuffling at all anymore. For example, the other day I shuffled my playlist and it picked a song and then played several songs in a row by that artist, and I looked at my playlist because I knew that couldn't be a coincidence, and it was just playing in the order that I added songs in. This happens on my computer as well.
