Spotify Connect taking over volume control of AV receiver / speakers

My Question or Issue

Since updating to iOS 16 a few days ago I have had problems with the Spotify app taking over and not allowing separate volume control of my AV receiver / speakers.

The AV receiver is a Pioneer VSX-934 though I don't think this is important as this didn't happen previous to the iOS 16 release / Spotify update.

When you connect to the AV receiver through the Spotify app to play music, you can control the volume of the AV receiver on the phone which is fine although the increments of volume isn't ideal. Trouble is if you try adjusting the volume of the AV receiver using it's own remote or volume nob, Spotify resets it back to what it had in the app and the volume ends up jumping around all over the place.

This didn't happen previous to iOS 16 / Spotify update a few days ago so something has changed there. Remote control volume and the Spotify app were playing nicely together before this and allowed each other to control the volume as and when, neither overriding one or another.

Any suggestions or anyone else get this? Presume the app is needing an update to fix this.

Playing with the settings does not change the behavior for me

Is Spotify going to update the app anytime soon?! Nothing for weeks now.....

I think I will switch to Apple if they don't fix this

The Spotify app has not been updated in 3 weeks. I'm hoping the next update fixes this...

Thank you for posting about this issue. I have got exactly the same problem ever since updating to iOS16. Running Spotify on iPhone 13 Pro Max + NAD M12. Before updating to iOS16 everything ran smoothly and flawlessly. PLEASE FIX THIS!!!

Hey everyone,

Thanks for all your help and feedback so far.

The team investigating this has identified the issue and is working on a fix. We'll post in this thread as soon as we have more news to share.

Take care,

Just a note there was an update today for iOS but it hasn’t fixed the issue 😞 Not saying if this update was supposed to or not, just a note.

Same issue here. It’s been going on for a few months. Will give it another few weeks, if an update coming within this timeframe doesn’t fix will cancel Spotify, given the amount of complaints and no resolution from Spotify is disappointing. Lots of other steaming music services to choose from.

Same problem with iPhone 13 and iPad Pro playing on NAD T758v3. Problem occurred just after upgrading to IOS 16.

Hi, I have exactly the same problem with iPhone 13 Pro and Sonos One. Spotify messes up with the volume and only allows increments of +-5 which is way too big of a step. Closing the Spotify app and controlling with the Sonos app solves the problem, but is really unhandy.

Hi, I have the same problem on iPhone 12 mini, iOS 16.0.3, Spotify app ver 8.7.68.568, AV receiver Yamaha R-N602.

Thanks all for reporting this, I’m having exactly the same issue, both with my Yamaha MusicCast BAR 400 and my older Bose SoundTouch 30. Each of those devices have also their own mobile app, so it’s easy to see the key issue which is a forced rounding of the device volume level to multiples of 5 by Spotify. This happens also when changing the device volume via physical remote control although neither device has an accurate display of the volume level hence why the exact behaviour is best witnessed using the relevant mobile app. If I set the volume to 41 it goes back to 40, if I set it to 44 it moves to 45 in less than a second.

If I close (“swipe up”) the Spotify app on my iPhone/iPad, then I can use again the remote control or the mobile app for the specific device and change the volume by increments of 1 instead of multiples of 5.

It’s indeed happening since the upgrade to iOS 16, so not sure if this would lie with Spotify devs or with Apple’s APIs/SDK, but it’s clearly an issue for a Spotify to address and let us know when it will be fixed by them or by Apple.

Thanks in advance Spotify team for your help on this obvious issue, let me know if you need videos but my description should be enough while avoiding that you waste time on a boring video which will likely be similar to what you have already received from others.

Exact the same Problem.

Ios16 and onkyo avr.

Any updates on this?

When will the error be fixed?
Would love to hear music again.

Yessss, for  me it is good again! Seems to have been fixed through the ios 16.1.1 update because did not yet update spotify to 8.7.82 version. In 16.1 with 8.7.78 the issue still occurred. Very nice, thx for all efforts

It’s not fixed for me, and I have iOS 16.1.1. Tried with Spotify 8.7.78 and then 8.7.82.

Wow I hope for me too; downloading 16.1.1 now!

Make sure that Spotify is actually running after the update. The problem can only be reproduced if Spotify is running. I have updated both iOS and Spotify to the latest releases and yet the problem is still there.

Unfortunately it's not fixed yet. In the meantime, I've found a parallel conversation here about the very same topic, albeit from a different angle:
