Spotify playback/queue resets when trying to connect between devices

Spotify playback/queue resets when trying to connect between devices

My Question or Issue

Playback constantly gets reset, losing all queued and playing next songs. It is really annoying because you can't recover any long queue you created.

These are some observed causes:

  • Switching playback between devices (i.e. between iphone, ipad, amazon alexa, macbook, etc.)
  • Queueing songs that are not available offline or no longer available to play on Spotify but saved on a playlist or liked songs

Hey there @GerardoAE

Thanks for getting in touch about this here in the Community.

Just to confirm, is this happening with devices that are on the same WiFi? We'd also like to know if you have the app open on all of the devices you want to have the app synced.

On another note, could you give us more info on what you mean by songs that are not available offline and on Spotify? Sending us some screenshots of this would come in handy. We'll take a closer look. You can attach it to your next response by using the Insert image option in the post editor. Make sure not to send any private info.

We'll be on the lookout.

Hi, thanks for the response!

Yes, they are on the same network even though Spotify marks them as "On other networks" as shown in the screenshot. All the devices are on the same account and same WiFi network.

As for songs not available offline, i mean songs not downloaded on the device. By not available on Spotify I mean songs I either added as local files or that have been removed from Spotify (they appear greyed out), making them unplayable even though they still appear on my library. If any of these come up in the shuffle, Spotify may skip them, but sometimes it just deletes the playback, as in losing any queued songs and the current playing songs.

It's hard to capture this on screenshots because it's random, but the "playback" interface just closes or stays blank, as in no song is playing.

Hey @GerardoAE,

Thanks for your reply and for the info shared.

In this case, we'd like to add some insights. Keep in mind it's expected local files appeared grayed out on devices in which they're not stored. For example, if the local files are stored on your mobile device, you'll see them grayed out on your Mac. It's also expected the app skips the local files when using Connect and the playback comes from a device in which the local files are not stored.

That being explained, if you haven't yet, we'd suggest you perform a clean reinstall of the app on the affected devices. By doing that the app can be up-to-date and you can make sure the cache is not leading to this inconvenience. You can follow the steps in this article to do it.

If this behavior continues after the reinstallation, we'd like to gather some additional info. Just to confirm, does the queue resets when you're using Connect to control the music from your mobile device and the playback comes from your Mac? If not sure, it'd be awesome if you could check.

Is this just happening when the playback comes from your speakers? If yes, we'd like you to know this tends to happen on devices which don't have the native app installed (such as the one on your mobile device or your computer).

If this is happening no matter which device the playback comes from, would you mind checking if the same happens when playing a playlist that doesn't contain local files or not available tracks? Give it a try and let us know how it goes.

Keep us in the loop!

When I switch from my phone to mac or vice-versa the song being played is still playing but the queue resets to the original randomised queue that was there when I clicked on my playlist. The songs from my playlist that were added before the song being played get added back in the same order.
